Hi all just had a cracking two day ride all around wales, stayed at the bikers campsite in camarthenshire cracking place. Anyway on return putting the bike in the garage i saw oil over the rim, i looked and saw a drip from the final drive at the bottom, however i think a bit of detail and then you guys might have sugestions before i start ripping everything to pieces (pictures to follow).
So last month i drained final drive to replace someone had put way to much in almost double the recomended 180ml if memory serves me correct anyway i replaced and also replaced the green o-ring on the speed sensor....i remeber it being very difficult to get the sensor back in an seat right (this may be of importance) anyway i got it on and away i went untill now. The oil is only present at the lower half of the final drive where it drips and i did notice oil up where the speed sensor is but doesnt look as bad....my thoughts are its leaking from that speed sensor o ring and then running down and then dripping off making it look a lot more dramatic. Is that o ring under pressure as its at the top so i was wondering how much would be able to get out. Anyway sorry for such a long post but any advice or if you have had a similar sutuation to advise on would be appteciated. Cheers

Cheers but thats for an r100gs i got a 2009 r1200rt, hopefully i posted this in the right section.

I would start off by cleaning it all up, then go for a short ride stopping frequently to see if you can see where it is coming from.

Good point dj, it cant be a big leak as i did it a month ago and have riden without noticing, its only when ive done a big ride that ive spotted it.

When I had a 12RT like yours the same symptom was a leaking outer seal on the FD... I changed that and all was well for the next 10k until I changed bike ... There always seemed to be a minor bit of play in the FD and that was common at the time...

How difficult was it to cgange the FD outer seal? I like fettleing so if its not major in terms of time am cost i may just do it annyway. I think its coming fron the speed sensor. Ive cleaned it all but wont be able to ride till tuesday to check. I remmember when putting tge sensor and green oring back in it was really hard to get it to sit right.

There is also a shim as well as the green o ring.
Outer seal is easy. Couple of self tappers screwed into the seal and pull on the screws, job done.

Yep, that's what I did and I just take a pic of how far the seal is in when I'm doing a seal like this ..👍

Hey guys quick update, i whipped off the wheel cleaned everything thought while off i might as well drain the FD oil and re fill it so i did that and then re fitted the speed sensor, i cleaned the hole to make sure everything was clean oring was fine (new from couple weeks ago) anyway put sensor back in tightened the one to torx screw holding it in. Anyway quick ride 15 minutes pulled over to a horror show FD oil all over the wheel, tyres, sprayed up the mud guard i got the torch on the go and looked at the speed sensor (fill point) it was just flowing out dripping all down the fd, brake discs then on the rim and tyre. anyway slow steady ride back and cleaned everything of back in the garage for another day. My question is what possibly could be causing this? im no isle of man mechanic but i do all my own spannering and putting a sensor in a hole with an o-ring and tightening down is both simple and well within my capabilities however here i find myself leaking like a sieve, Any advice or if any one has had a similar experience drop me a shout, Cheers All

Maybe silly questions...
Did you put correct amount of oil?
Is the O ring correct size?

I am having a little weep from mine (2096 bike) it seems the inside and outside oil seals are on way out.
Winter strip down looming

No silly questions at this point mate, yeah oring ordered from motorworks and double checked on my emails ita correct for my year (just in case) the little silver shim is there. Oil i put 180ml i believe to be correct. Each time ive put it it though it never feels....in right if that makes sence last timei worked it in making a consious effort and it seemed a bit better so i thought, i have the shim and oring on the sensor when i push it in, is it worth putting the o ring in the housing where it should sit and then maybe try pushing the sensor in, its weird as it should just be a simple non issue, on my gs its a much simpler set up, drain on bottom fill on top. This messing around with the speed sensor is a right ball ache as you have to take wheel.and exhaust off. Mikey on the piss makes the most sense, problem is you cant see it when your in there, any kind of sealent i could use as well just to double up on sealing up?

Ok,
The lead in chamfer needs to be spotless.( bright metal)
Shim onto sensor first, followed by the green o ring on 2009.
Lube it with a bit of oil then thumb pressure should get it home.
You can see it fairly well ,and it should seat without forcing.
You could use a big flat blade screwdriver but be gentle and only push on the centre line of the sensor, not the screw location flange.

Just reread your last post,
It won’t need any additional sealant if it’s clean.
Motorworks can sometimes source their own seals and o rings.
The oem one is green.
As a by the by,on a 2009 I’d put 200 ml in the unit.
The 180 specified.can cause issues with input pinion bearing wear.

Cheers Mikey, now you mention it, the o ring i have is not green it replaced tge green one which did have some wear, motorworks are usually pretty good fir everything but i spose someone can always put a wrong i ring in a packet, not sure where to get the oem green one. 200ml ok i did read it used to be to 200+ in the manuel then bmw ammended it to 180, 200 seems a good medium. Will try all that over again and report back 👍👍

Is the shim present and in the correct place.?
If you’ve just pushed the sensor in and tightened the screw,it may well be “ on the piss”
Well done Mikey, got in there up close with the torch and proper glasses on oring was truly on the piss bulging out the bottom completely not sealing. I got a new one from motor works, cleaned again an spent ages checking and double checking it is a tight fit spose that why it can move so much but im pretty sure its home now ran the bike up without the wheel on just to see if anything weeped nothing so ill take her for a proper test run later, 200ml in the unit mikey as you suggested. cheers all for the help sometimes you do need to be just told to go back to the basics.
