Final drive reassembly

I'm planning a bit of maintenance, and am wondering what I need to buy in advance.

If I take the final drive off the bike (to drain the oil), when reattaching it, should I lube the splined end of the driveshaft that inserts into the final drive? If so, what lube is used? I have memories of being told to use something called "Optimol white paste" - which I assume is some sort of molybdenum disulphide grease - but I want to make sure I use the correct stuff.

Any other precaution that need to be taken? It all looks pretty straightforward to me.

When you say "off the bike" do you really mean that or are you just going to remove the torque arm and swivel down to drain ?

When my final drive was replaced - there was some mention of the new kit having special tool(s) included - I presume you have read the appropriate bits of the RepROM ?

You're right Clive, I'm just going to swivel it and drain the oil. I've read the relevant instructions and it seems pretty simple.

I've obtained some molybdenum disulphide grease, for the splines. Based on info posted elsewhere in this section that's the right stuff.

I am intriqued; why do you want to change the FDU oil?

Because I'm concerned that it may have got contaminated with water due to the amount of time my bike spends submerged

This was a problem on older bikes, shouldn't be a problem on the 1200 due to the lack of a breather on the final drive. But better safe than sorry.
