Hi, quick question....
Going to replace the final drive oil on my 2009 R1200gs.
I have read various threads and watched a few vids of people refilling the fd via the speed sensor port.
I have also read that some models, 08 onwards, had a final drive unit with a separate fill plug?
Does mind have one or should I just fill via speed sensor?
My final drive has the drain bolt at the 6 o'clock position if that helps.

Cheers

Can you post up a photo of yours just to be sure we are all talking about the same thing? (using a 24 hour clock might lead to misplaced directions!)
The earliest ones had no drain plug so you had to pull the joint and tip it backwards, which coincidentally meant you had a good look at the splines. If you use a cheapo plastic measuring jug (or nick one from the kitchen??) you have a pretty good idea of how much was in there, along with any bits or lumps that fall out.
The fill plug should not be relied on to give the level - make sure you measure 180ml out - I use a big syringe with a bit of flexy just for this.

So I think I need to be a subscriber to post pics, will get that done.

In the meantime the drain bolt points directly down, lowest point of final drive assy, 6 o'clock position

There is a separate fill bolt for the 180mls of oil but you can also fill from the abs/speed sensor. You have, to take the wheel off, and when looking from the silencer side, the fill plug is about at the 11 o’clock position. The sensor is to the right of that with the lead attached. the sensor has a tight seal on it and can be fiddly to get out and back in again. The drain plug you already have sight of at the bottom of the housing.

There has always been a fillplug?
I seem to recall that it was only the drain plug that was omitted for a couople of years. Or am I wrong?

At the 11 o'clock position I have a bolt with allen key head whilst all others are torx, this is the fill plug I assume.

So is it best to fill here or at speed sensor? Any benefit from doing it at speed sensor as opposed to fill plug?

Better to fill at the fill plug 😉 That will avoid disturbing the ABS sensor.
FYI, as I understand it, BMW reduced the amount of oil in response to the number of failing seals. This a typical reaction from BMW and may not necessarily bevthe best solution.
I have always used 220ml and not suffered any failures since it was rebuilt by Mikeyboy - it now has 60,000 + miles on that FD, 165,000 on the bike itself.
