Just returned from the Moto GP at Silverstone and found oil all over my back tyre, wheel, rear brake disc etc. It would appear that a seal has gone on the on the final drive hub behind the brake disc.
Is this a job that has to be done by a dealer or simular? i'm an engineer by trade but dont know if special tools are required.
Any ideas of cost for the job?
Thanks,

Do a search matey, a few peeps on here have done their own final drives on 1200's including PatZX12.

The alloy rear disk carrier can be removed from the bevel drive/hollow axle by heating with a heat gun to expand the casting on its splines after first removing a large circlip then pulling off with pullers, obviously due to being a hollow spindle you need to put something in the hole to pull against. See here, post 32 onwards for pics:

The bevel drive/hollow axle can then be undolted from the rear face of the casting (black bit into silver bit). Dissassemble and replace seals/bearings then rebuild. I believe you don't need to reshim, but I'm happy to be corrected by those who have actally done the job themselves.

Many thanks for the info Pukmeister, a very informative set of posts.

I was going to try replacing the seal myself but thought as the bike had only just been serviced by my local man I would give it back to him.

Turned out to be a leaking O ring on the abs sensor.

That's saved me a load of work and cash.
