Hi Guys.

I am new here so please bare with me.

Do you know the final drive round seal part number? Or where can i buy it from UK? It seems that i have a small leak. I think it is a really small one since i dont see any drops but the plastic cover is a little oily and it smells like onion.

Thanks

Changed one on 2 bikes so far, last one was a week ago. If just a smear of oil, no rush. Check the wheel movement to make sure the bearings are ok. 1 or 2mm at the wheel rim is ok. You can do it without draining the oil by lying the bike onto left side using a cushion / mattress or similar. Be careful prying off the plastic cover not to mark the housing, there is a wire clip next easily removed, then the old seal - be careful not to damage any metal parts. Drive in the new seal using the old one as a drift. If the bike is new to you, I would change the oil and grease the spline to be sure all is in order. Sorry if I am teaching you to suck eggs...

thanks for your reply. I will change the oil as well since i dont trust the old one and since im doing it i will change the gearbox oil as well. There is no play in the wheel - im obsessed with this one. checking it when im on middle stand all the time. 12/6 and 9/3 - wheel movement checking :)

Depending on the year of the bike, you might want to check the rear disc carrier bolt bosses for cracks. I had that on a 2005 GS...

Thanks a lot for your answers. I ordered the seal and new oil for the final drive and the gearbox.

Now i have a big dilemma. I am not sure if the seal is actually leaking.

I went on a long trip 300 miles and it was half rainy half dry. At the end of the trip i checked the plastic cover on the final drive and looked as it had a little oil on it but nothing under... just some dust on the final drive paint. I was sure that i have a leak. I cleaned up everything and after returning home... 300 miles again ..... i checked the plastic cover again -- no oil on it... i removed the plastic cover and since the weather was really bad .... 300 miles of heavy rain .. i found some water under the cover with an oily feel in it... and with a smell of onion ... but again nothing on the paint... so is it normal? a tiny amount of oil under the cover...

I dont understand .. is it leaking or not... should i change it before the oil change?

This is my first time im doing this... the bike has 13 k miles and i want to change the oil to put around 200 ml ( not 180 or 220 ) because im not sure how the previous owner did the FD.

What do you think?

I would definitely change the oil for peace of mind. Leave the seal, it is easy to change and unlikely to get worse suddenly. Grease the UJ / input shaft spline. then you are set!
