I've been scanning other BMW forums - GS owners are not on their own with FD problems.
I really love my beemer.... I'm struggling to think of a replacement. In the interests of this, there must be some happy tales of "100,000 miles of hard use & no issues"?????

How about half that :nenau

50k would impress me after the tales of many that have knackered four in this time and some who have not managed to get to the first service before the FD blew up.

And how many "1200" type FD's are out there?? I mean 1200R, R, RS, GS, RT,. what are we talking about here 30, 40 , 50, or more thousand units, makes the fail percentage seem really small, The "sealed for life" fiasco counted for many early failures imo

My bike's a mkII, and had it's last FD fitted in 2009, which has lasted just 6k miles.

I find it hard to understand how some bikes can eat 3 FD's in 20k, but other bikes are ok...... (i assume since we're not unindated with reports of this so far???!!)

Anyone done just 20k or 30k without issue?

'05 GS on 50k - final drive was replaced at 12k due to paint peeling. No other issues :)

Looks like I'm the only one without a dodgy FD then :D so I wouldn't get a 1200, dead unreliable they are :thumb

Tempting fate, but 56k+ miles on a 54 plate from new. Original FD.

....hang-on! What was that exploding noise from the garage?

:D

05, 1200RT also 22k ignored the "sealed for life" nonsense and changed F/Drive oil 1st at 600 miles then every 6K/ or every year from new, in other words its had 6 oil changes in 5 years (EP90 hypoid gear oil) .........and its never been forded or immersed in water, also no FPC, EWS or Battery failure.

'07, 21k, Oil change at 600 then every 6000 using 75/90 GL5 and the proper quantity, none of this 'lets put a bit less in it and stop it pressurising the outer seal and stop it lubing the pinion bearing nonsense'............also no FPC, EWS or Battery failure! (typed touching a wooden desk!)

08 GS at 67K - rear bearing (?) changed at 18K - could feel movement in the rear when cornering. Since abut 36K/48K I have the FD oil changed every 12K.

<if my FD goes now, I'm gonna be upset>

This is starting to confirm my suspiscions that the percentage of FD failures is very small in comparison to the number of FD's without fault.

Out of interest does it have anything to do with extreme off-roading, ie have those who have had FD failures done a lot of heavy off-roading?

What are the signs/symptoms of a FD failure?
