I changed the oil in my final drive and now I'm paranoid about how warm it's getting. I don't think I've ever felt the final drive after a run, so checking it yesterday was rather pointless as I have nothing with which to compare it . :blast

So, can you tell me: when you've been for a decent run, how warm does your final drive get? Mine was somewhere between warm and hot - not too hot to hold your hand on, but nearly.

Any non-scientific observations welcomed!

Warm to hot is OK, not being able to leave your hand on it is not good.
Remember thou that if you have just done 120 for a tank full down a German
auto thingy, it will be very hot. Mine gets hot after a run,when i had the bad one that got so hot it turned the silver paint to dark grey.:eek: They changed it then :thumb2 no probs since and it has had some fast long runs...
Do a check by putting your hand on the gearbox and see how HOT that gets:eek:

Thanks, bustupbiker, that's just the reply I was hoping for. After a long blast down the motorway it was still ok to leave your hand on. After normal bimbling about, it was easily cooler. Seems like I'll be ok. :thumb

Pleasantly warm to the touch - never hot.

I have checked the temp with a infra red thermometer in different seasons and:

winter ( -10 +10°c ) --> between 35 and 45 °C
summer (+15 +35 ) --> between 45 and 55°C

Respect! :bow

Nice summer air temperatures you get too....lucky to see 30 here....

Temperature all depends how much load you are putting through it and the ambient conditions. Chains and sprockets also get hot but are flapping in the breeze to disipate heat more quickly.

Of course you could stop touching it after each ride and go and make a cup of tea?

the same thing on a R1150:

This is EXACTLY the level of detail I was looking for, BBR. Everyone else, please take note!

Now I know my bike isn't about to explode, I will indeed stop worrying. Well, once I've nipped out and bought myself an infra-red thermometer, anyway.

As for the cuppa...I'm afraid I'm a smoker, so my post-ride ciggie routine can quite easily take in a quick tour of recently interfered-with items for oil leaks (sump, gearbox and final drive drain plugs and fillers) and abnormal temperatures.

Anyway, I have a wife. She should hear the bike roar up the drive and put the kettle on.
