Should have joined this forum years ago but am making amends now.
Having enjoyed many years BMW bike ownership with a variety of models I now own an '04 GS which I have had for a couple of years. It's done 25,000. My son also has a GS and it had an 18,000 service recently and a comment about an oil leak between the engine and gearbox prompted a call to BMW who agreed to replace the seals for free. The bike is an early '06.
I looked at my engine / gearbox join and noticed mine too had a weep of oil in the same location. I took it in to the same BMW dealers and they wouldn't let me ride it home as they thought the final drive was about to fail.
I notice from the threads on this site that a few of you have had problems in this area and would like to know the likelihood of BMW meeting some of the costs of putting things right. I am somewhat surprised that a shaft drive should exhibit such a failure and after years of extolling the virtues of shaft v chain am a bit miffed to say the least. Your thoughts on this matter would be appreciated.

Hi Beemabiker, welcome to UKGSer.

I've noted from your profile that you have a 1200GS (added it to your main title) so I'll move this post over to that section of the forum where I think you'll get a better response to your questions.

Enjoy your stay with us. :)

Loads of people on here have had oil seals and final drives replaced by BMW out of goodwill, i.e. outside of warranty. I had my gearbox seals replaced for just the cost of parts (£40-odd), not because BMW GB stumped up, but because the dealer paid (long story). BMW GB refused to pay, apparently.

One of the problems is that BMW GB will only talk to the dealer. If you try to contact them direct, they'll refer you back to the dealer. You have no real control over what the dealer tells BMW GB. I know some have struggled but BMW have refused to pay.

If it's out of warranty, I don't think you have a leg to stand on if they refuse. The warranty says "If it breaks down within two years, we'll fix it." If it breaks down after that, you will be reliant on goodwill.

I'd be polite but firm and ask the dealer to press BMW GB for a goodwill contribution.

Good luck.

Robin,

I thought as much. My son works for a bicycle company & he tells me that whenever a customer contacts directly they invariably cave in and agree the claim. If BMW sit this one out I'll have to take it on the chin. Oh happy days. Thank you for responding to my question.

I am havibg my Gearbox seal and final drive done this Saturday at SSB.
If I can I will retain parts and post pics.
Not much help I know but may be good info?

I have weeping oil seals at the front of the engine and between the engine and gearbox, took it to my dealers who wanted to strip it before contacting BMW to see what they would do (it was just out of warantee). But that's no good to me, I can't afford to have my bike in bit in the dealers and me stuck with some huge bill, I'll have to do it myself.

BMW customer care were of no use whatsoever...

It has crossed my mind to DIY it. The Haynes manual implies it is fairly simple with only 3 spanners ( suitable for a competent mechanic). The oil weep is another matter and while the drive shaft is out that could be an interesting challenge.
Thanks for your support

what was the outcome of your oil leaks did you hve to pay the full cost

Gearbox seals

Don't know if this is the same seals but I got mine changed under warranty, then they failed some ten months later when the bike was out of warranty. My local dealer then chased up BMW who eventually agreed to pay for the parts as long as I paid some of the labour which came to around £40 but the good thing now is the part is now under there guarantee for two years so if it goes again its down to them or so they said at the time.

Hope this helps :aidan
