hi guys, the final drive on my 55 plate 1200 has given up, i have managed to find a FD from a 2010 model for the right price question is will it fit?? my bike is a none servo and none abs model.

Send it to SED in Sleaford and get it repaired properly! 01529-300434

So can these guys work fully on the modern 1200's? Would be worth knowing as I would like to get my bike fully stripped, cleaned and all glitches sorted.

Cheers
John

Whether or not the second hand 2010 FD will fit, if the price was right and I had faith in the provider I'd go for the rebuild option since with new bearings the FD will be as good as new (whatever that means). I've had a secondhand FD from a well known source that was as bad as the FD I was trying to replace. If the input shaft has any side-to-side wiggle in it then the support bearings are on the way out.

Incidentally, I too would like to know why a 2010 FD wouldn't fit as the only issue I can think of is possibly the speed sensor which did change at some point as did a bearing and the filler/drain plugs but can't see why this would make a difference.

Yes they can, but they specialise in Airheads, they do quite a bit with 1100's especially the gearboxes and bevel drives. There's a year's worth of Airhead rebuilds waiting but the occasional gearbox and bevel drive can be slotted in!

The newer final drives have a different ABS pulse triggering system, if you use it on an earlier bike your speedo and ABS won't work properly.

cheers Pukmeister, i think i will fit it anyway because i have bought it very cheap, i will just use my sat nav for the speedo until i can find a suitable replacement or get mine repaired.

the gearing is different as well I believe. As said whether you have ABS or not you speedo will still not work and everything related to that such as the range, MPG, trip and odometer of the computer. Unless you fit some other speedo not only are you breaking the law, perhaps not important to you and GPS isnt a legal speedometer. If you got if seriously cheap like you said then sell it, make some money and get your one fixed.

marki, there is no legal requirement to have a speedo, all you need is a brake light and a horn. i know it sounds stupid but its true.

who told you that? It is not tested in an MOT but must be present and illuminated. It is a requirement under construction an use though.

THE ROAD VEHICLES (CONSTRUCTION AND USE) REGULATIONS 1986 (SI 1986 No. 1078)

SPEEDOMETERS
These must be fitted to all motor vehicles registered from 1 October 1937.

Speedometers must be maintained in good working order at all "material times" ie when a vehicle is used on a journey unless:
a defect occurs during a journey

A vehicle may be rejected at its annual test if the speedometer is not fitted, or is inoperative, is not illuminated, it has a missing or broken dial glass, etc.

The requirement to fit speedometers does not extend to vehicles fitted with EU approved recording equipment (see under "Tachographs" on page 235–239).

Chances of getting caught are slim but it is required.

Check again!! There is a specific exclusion,Not all motor vehicles need one! doesnt apply in this case though. GPS Speedo would pass an MOT if it could be illuminated, although it may get an advisory.

Con & Use Regs.

Reg. 35.—(1) Save as provided in paragraphs (2) and (3), every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately.

(2) Paragraph (1) does not apply to—

(a)a vehicle having a maximum speed not exceeding 25 mph;
(b)a vehicle which it is at all times unlawful to drive at more than 25 mph;
(c)an agricultural motor vehicle which is not driven at more than 20 mph;
(d)a motor cycle first used before 1st April 1984 the engine of which has a cylinder capacity not exceeding 100 cc;
(e)an invalid carriage first used before 1st April 1984;
(f)a works truck first used before 1st April 1984;
(g)a vehicle first used before 1st October 1937; or
(h)a vehicle equipped with recording equipment marked with a marking designated as an approval mark by regulation 5 of the Approval Marks Regulations and shown at item 3 in Schedule 4 to those Regulations (whether or not the vehicle is required to be equipped with that equipment) and which, as regards the visual indications given by that equipment of the speed of the vehicle, complies with the requirements relating to the said indications and installations specified in the Community Recording Equipment Regulation.
(3) Instead of complying with paragraph (1) a vehicle may comply with Community Directive 75/443 or with ECE Regulation 39.
So it would appear a slow driven 1100GS is exempt under Paragraph C.:rob

You sure about the Gps speedo? They don't work in tunnels or highly built up areas for start.
