disturbing vibes coming from my final drive /drive shaft at about 50/60 mph only 3.2k on the clock a visit to mr bmw me thinks , feels like something is seriously wearing, will let you know the diagnosis

Hi mate,

I am also getting some vibes etc from the rear wheel and think it is the knackered Karoo Tyre on there at 3000 miles. Had the same weird vibrations before with TKC80's on my Africa Twin which went away fitting new tyres.

Unless you running normal road tyres which of course would prove my theory completly wrong :blast :D

Would have it checked out just for safety sake anyway :thumb2

got the hp back from my local dealer the concencus is that they all do that sir apparently they phoned bmw uk and they reckon its the way the final drive gears have been cut [m/cnd ] during production , im not convinced ,went on the ace cafe reunion run sunday all motorway work and it was like riding a dumper at legal motorway speeds , i think they're taking the piss coz its only a couple of months before warranty runs out , any way i will keep you posted

They are a bit clunky at low speeds (try slipping the clutch in and out at walking pace) however they are not Dumper trucks and the ride is very smooth at speeds both legal and above - I would take it back right now, explain why you are not happy and get it checked again.

Do you have another dealer in your area?

Final drive

Just my few cents worth, i have had the super moto wheels on for the last few weeks and the bike felt rough or not composed on the road , so last weekend for the Tossers spin in Cork, I put on the Trail wheels with worn Karoo's and the bike now feels agail again and I don't seem to be listining to noises in the final drive ? and what fun it seems , I don't seem to be happy with the super moto wheels , and all the time I used them the bike felt twichy at medium speeds and fell into corners . I am at the stage where I seem to be more confident on the Road with the trail wheels , so maybe the last time the bike will ever see the supermoto wheels on, but at high speed the sm wheels trackecd much straighter 160 km Plus

If you interested to get rid of the SM wheels please send me a pm with price as I am looking for a set. I have friends on your island that can collect :D

Thanks

When I took my bike in last week, there was a re-call for the final drive to be checked. Best give your dealer a bell and see if yours needs checking.

My bike's in the shop for at least another week ( awaiting parts ) so i'll keep you posted when I get it back.

paranoid

got a bit of oil around the "hole" in the rear FD unit.. but not vibration and other noise other than normal... (got the SM wheels on)

do I really need to visit my local friendly dealer.. or a little bit of oil coming out from here and there is normal...

I think this is just a couple of cable ties to reposition. The two ties holding the rear underguard to the frame rail can rub on the final drive and/or brake lines on full suspension compression. Anti chaffing recall only!
On a similar note I noticed that my brake line from the rear resevior to master cylinder was chaffing against the paralever arm (slight wear to hose). A little plastic holder/spacer thingy was incorrectly positioned. Might be worth checking yours.
As to funny vibrations from the final drive - it's something I've lived with for 25 years. The more paranoid I get the worse the vibes. Ignore them and they go away - apart from the shaft on my 100GS, but that was just one big "clunk". and "they all do sir!" Hope it's nothing serious.
