Hmm finally bit the bullet and test rode one today and I don't get it , probably just me or my riding style. Yep nice engine etc etc., but a number of niggles that imho for me would be a deal breaker. I not having a downer on the WC it is obviously a cracking bike for some, but if I am parting with 14k I would like it to be closer to my prefect bike. On the strength of todays test rides WC TE and 1600 GTL I am more likely to part with 19.5k for the top spec GTL than the GS, I never thought I would ever think that way.

Pros, cracking engine ,quick off the mark, although I did feel like it needed 7th gear although looking at the revs it obviously didn't. I could easily get 60 65 mpg out of it which is more like I would expect, as I can easily get 50-55 mpg out of my GSA ,with its barn door aerodynamics.

The seats major improvement on the previous model, unlikely to need a change to aftermarket alternative.

Hand guards where certainty better than they look, working surprisingly well. Also unlike a number of reports, I thought the heated grips work relatively well.

The sat nav position was fine for me and certainty easier to reach than on my current GSA.

Oh the exhaust note definitely better than the TC.

Niggles:- Side stand what the fuck, too short and that bloody thing that sticks out in between the peg and gear shift, it pissed me off from the moment I rolled off with the bike.

The lean angle, does 1" of steel tube cost that much? (for what its worth I thought the same on the K1600 GTL.) Just seemed too much of an after thought.

Switch gear, I am on record as to not liking the change to Jap style switching and the test ride just confirmed it to me. The wheel thingy made things worse, especially as I have quite small hands.

The old system in my opinion encourages use of indicators as no thought is required to use them, with the Jap system and my small hands indicating is a positive action not instinctive but maybe that's just me.

There where a couple others things that didn't sit right .

On the positive side I look forward to the new GSA and to see what changes are made from market/dealership feed back.

However if there is some one out there that can take my current bike and fit the LC's engine/gearbox etc that I would buy and be very happy I get all good bits from both.

I'm thinking the same way as you Yellow Peril. Its not a Marmite type bike, IE love or hate it, Some very good bits and some no better or worse than the older Hex heads. However I think a period of ownership would soon adjust the rider to a new style overcoming any problems.
When I changed from F800GS to R1200gs at first I loved, then hated the bike, I just could not get into the swing. After a few weeks I was hooked and test riding the latest GS800 was a real disappointment.
I will own a new LC, probably next year and know it will be the best bike I have ever owned, for 2 years or so until the next model arrives.

Yeah I know where you're coming from. I test drove a Lamborghini Aventador recently - lovely engine, looks, handling, brakes etc but the cup holder was rubbish. I'm out.

you Wombat :D:D:D

Yeah but has has a point!

Whilst little niggles are indeed sometimes fecking annoying, they're not going to be things that make or break a bike for me.

There's a bigger picture to be had. The character, the performance, the handling, ability to do distance, is it a bike for fast A roads? Is it a bike for nadgery B roads? How would it be on fast track stuff?

That's what I'm interested in, not whether the feckin side stand is an inch too short :D

(Sorry yellow peril ... ;))

I know what you mean Giles but sometimes it's the niggles that get you in the end, the itch you can't scratch. Yes I know 1" on the side stand in some respects is stupid but added to the other problem with the side stand it really does get me. Having thought about it, the side stand was pretty much identical to that on the K1600 another sign of homogalation.

See how many bikes/cars come back on the market after very short periods of time because of that itch that couldn't be scratched.

The switchgear really does disappoint but having rode 1600 and WC back to back they use exactly the same gear , after some research it appears that since 2010 BMW in their wisdom or not have homogalmised all of their switchgear. Reading a few Rt forums they too are not necessarily impressed either.

Don't get me wrong it's a cracking engine, but most of my riding is long distance touring 2 up or exploring B roads , hell down here we only have one real A road. If I want a track bike I would have a sports bike plenty of cheap low mileage ones out there. I am sorry for long distance touring it is difficult to beat the current GSA even with the 6% improvement in fuel economy , a new GS couldn't beat an old GSA over say 400 miles without being ridden like a loon.

But as I said I do look forward to seeing/ trying the new GSA which should arrive around Sept 2014.

But at the moment as I said after the 2 test rides I would have been happy to part with the 19.5k for the GTL as it really did make me smile and will be doing some sums.

Couldn't you just buy one of those sidestand feet which raise the height by (strangely enough) about an inch!...........I had one on my GSA as I found it hard to get off the stand whilst on a downslope and fully fuelled.

If they haven't started making them for the water-cooled already I am sure it won't be long. :D

Took the old side stand foot off my TC and fitted it to the GS LC, not a perfect fit but it has stayed on.....

My Lamborghini doesn't have a cup holder

HAHAHA

I agree with that side stand arm thing - I'd have it off with an angle grinder.

Disagree about the indicator switch, but then the RT is my first BMW. Had loan of one with the old system and couldn't get on with it at all.

The niggles could easily ruin ownership, unless you want to start with the farkles on day one.

No need to whip it off with an angle grinder, put a bottle jack under the side stand then slip the bottle jack handle (if it's a hollow one ) or a length of tubeing over the little nub thing and bend it down an inch, done it on mine today, problem sorted :thumb
