Is it possible to get the zumo to list ONLY petrol stations when it does a search for FUEL. At the moment it lists all the corner stores as well as petrol stations which will be problem on the continent when I can't tell the difference

Never considered that... On the two occasions I did use that facility on the recent Tour that wasn't an issue.
The fuel stops were fuel stops. (Mapping was updated about 6 weeks ago).
Hassle was finding a card that would work in the machines.
On one occasion despite the sign showing the usual, Visa debit, credit and two MasterCards would not work. Oddly enough a Maestro card did.
Cash in pocket is no use on Saturday afternoons or later in the sticks...

I used my 660 twice recently to search for petrol stations in France, and it that is all it listed.

This appears to be an issue in the UK only. On the continent it only lists fuel stations and hypermarkets (who presumably have fuel). However, in the UK it seems to list convenience stores as well

Using Mapsource I have checked it it all the mapping versions I have (2011.1, 2012.1 and 2012.2) and it's increasingly the case.

Maybe we should all contact Garmin and complain?

My gripe with fuel searches is the number of stations in the UK that have closed (usually remote rural ones) for business or even been demolished.

As I think I've said before, map 'updates' have more to do with cramming in more advertising than correcting faults, IMHO.

I'll "second" this point. I have checked my home town, Cheltenham, on my 660, & I reckon a good 50% of the garages listed don't exist. At least one of them was turned into flats some 10 years ago, so if I was using it in an area I was unfamiliar with, I'd take it with a pinch of salt. Might be more use to look up the shops, & try any Tesco, ASDA etc that's listed.

I know that the mapping comes from Navteq but I'm not sure if they also provide the POI data, maybe this is something that Garmin add from other providers. Quite frankly I don't know. Have raised a ticket with Garmin over the issue, not holding my breath though.

The closed petrol station thing is not just a UK problem. I was in Mulhouse in Franch last summer. the 1st two fuel stops suggested by the Garmin were no longer trading - one was boarded up and the intermarché had been knocked down to make a new bricolage. I gave up using the Garmin & followed the signs to a new Leclerc hypermarket that wasn't in the database.

Rather like telling friends you have moved or changed email addresses, Mapsource / Navteq relies on the owners of the site (fuel station, garage, shop or whatever) to keep them updated with news of closures or fresh openings. Similarly, they rely on Joe Public to point out any glaring errors in the map, permanently closed roads for instance. I reported one permanently closed road off the back of Regent Street, London W1 that has a building built across it. I also reported two glitches in the map in France, both of which I happened to trip over. These were not the sudden appearance of a roundabout, but real map errors; for instance when Mapsource shows a main trunk road as having a break in it for no apparent reason. Given the scale of Mapsource, stretcing from the north of Finland to the tip of Spain, with all the roads, streets and lanes in between, it's a miracle there are not more.

Anyone can report the errors, simply by contacting them. Just make sure you are right when you do it.

Going straight to 'the horses mouth', this being Navteq the 3rd party provider of the mapping data that Garmin provide might be the best approach. They provide an on-line tool for reporting mapping issues.

However, I'm not sure if it's them that are responsible for setting the categories that POIs are grouped by on Garmin PNDs

Don't expect any changes any time soon though....

Same here - in France three weeks ago and the first 3 were derelict but we found an unlisted one by asking a local! Off subject slightly but I wish you could search for 'on route' petrol rather than just the closest!

But you can....

Go to 'Where To' > 'Points of Interest' and then, instead of choosing a category select 'Near' at the bottom of the screen. Then select 'My Current Route' (you need an active route for this not to be greyed out) and click OK. You'll now be taken back to the POI category screen where you can search for POIs along your route.

This works well in my experience, so long as the petrol station is still there

You can use the view the POIs on the map to see it's proximity to your route as it also include those a short distance from it. If you have a choice then the one on the route would probably be more suitable.

We used this on the continent this year as I was riding with my m8 on his Ducati that needed fuel pretty regularly. Combined with PMR radio comms it made the experience pretty slick; he's let me know if he was getting low, at next lights I would ask 'Doris' where the next filling station was on our route, would report distance to go back to my m8 and Robert's your Mother's brother. For those filling stations off the route it took us no further than a couple of km at the most, I'm not sure what width of 'corridor' it searches in though.

There are also other options in the 'Search Near' list as well as 'My Current Route', these are; 'Where I am Now' (default), 'A Different City' and 'My Destination'.

Thanks for this Bumpkin - I'd worked out how to do this on my old 2720, but I'd assumed it wasn't possible on the 660 cos it didn't jump out at me

I heard back from Garmin support on this issue this morning, having reported it to them as mentioned above. They wanted further info on my mapping and devices and an example which I have now provided. It looks like this issue is now being looked into.

I also pointed them to this thread so it might be useful if those that have noticed this problem post below with their mapping version and GPS model. I think mapping is the most relevant TBH.

the issue has been recognised as valid and has now been escalated from European support to the States. However, currently they are only investigating it on the 7xx series Nuvi as that's what I have and reported it on. I did mention in my emails that other users with Zumos seem to be suffering from the same problem, hopefully that will get passed on and checked out by the techies in the US.

Just to clarify what I've reported:

On my Nuvi 765T the sub category selection is missing when searching for POIs under the Fuel main category.

Where To > Points of Interest > Fuel gives me a list of locations combining Convenience Stores, Auto Fuel and Truck Stops. It should present these as a list of options first and also give the choice of All Fuel. This is what happens on my StreetPilot 2720 (with 2011.1 mapping).

I would be interested to hear from Zumo 550 and 660 owners to see if the above happens to them as well. Garmin have the URL of this thread so will hopefully look in and check it out.

I also asked why Convenience Stores are in the fuel category to start with, it doesn't really make sense. If I were searching for lighter fluid I'd look in shopping

I've just gone though the other main POI categories and it does the same for lodging as well. It should offer sub categories such as Hotels, Camping etc. but just goes straight to showing them all.

I know on my recent trip across France many Shopping stores now have Petrol Stations as part of their complex - usually the ones where you can only use a credit/debit card i.e. No Attendant on site. Maybe thats why.

Yes, on the continent it seems to work as expected with the big supermarkets that you expect to have fuel listed.

I think there's a couple of issues here; convenience should be categorised under shopping in the mapping data, not fuel. The firmware on some GPS units needs an update to see, and optionally filter by, the sub categories within the fuel main category.

In both current Mapsource (6.16.3) and on my Nuvi using mapping (2012.2); In the UK lots of little grocery stores, off licences, post offices and the like, are included in a general search for fuel. These locations obviously don't sell fuel for vehicles unless you're topping up your old diesel with Mazola cooking oil Quite why they are sub categorised within the main fuel category escapes me

Interestingly enough if you actually select the convenience sub category in Europe you will see all the small convenience stores listed. I'm sure that these should be in the main category of shopping and this is an oversight somewhere along the line. Otherwise the search in Europe works as it should. This indicates to me that there's something wrong with the way that the convenience stores are categorised within the mapping data for UK locations.

It's a gross inconvenience (coincidental choice of word there) when doing a search for fuel to have all these locations listed, especially on the GPS whilst on the road as it's difficult to differentiate between legitimate fuel stations and corner shops unless you go for the obvious ones like Shell or BP etc. If there was the ability to filter within the fuel main category then it would be a work around, and not so bad, for the mis-categorisation of these but that's not available on my Nuvi where it is on my old StreetPilot.

There must have been previous complaints about this; People looking for fuel but, if they're not careful, the GPS has taken them to an off licence or newsagents...

Coincidentally I downloaded BaseCamp this morning and gave it a try, obviously convenience is still listed under fuel as I believe that's an error within the mapping data. But interestingly enough these locations were not included when doing a search for fuel without specifying a sub category (as in searches on the continent using Mapsource). To see the convenience stores in the search resulks you have to select the convenience sub category.
