my finel drive ax bearing has failed at 60 000 miles ( www.realoem.com for diagram) has any one changed this bearing with out buying a finel drive complet if so how did you get the threaded ring off. so far i have tried using tool to screw it off. it made shit out of threaded ring. then tried heat and blunt chisel. i now have to buy new threaded ring. i then tried to weld a ring round the inside of it. the weld would not take to it.has anyone any ideas.

I presume you mean the input pinion locking ring.

I tried undoing my FD threaded ring with a home made (welded) castellated tool and I couldn't shift it, luckily I got a new FD anyway as a goodwill gesture due to input shaft seal failure. They are torqued up real tight so you need a fixture to hold the FD down and a long extrnsion bar to apply sufficient torque to undo.

The only guy I know of who has undone his is Patzx12 of this forum, who posted an excellent write up on here. He made his own tool in a lathe/mill and then cleverly used the bed of the mill for his clamping fixture.

If I can find the original post I'll edit a link here.

EDIT: Here you go

The good thing about the EVO Paralever final drive on the 1200 moels is that the crownwheel does not have taper roller bearings so no problems due to setting endfloat/preload as the crownwheel axle floats between the two bearings, although there are shims under the crownwheel access cover to set the gear meshing depth. It's all in the RepRom disk, which I strongly suggest you read before attempting an FD rebuild if you haven't already done so.

I believe Steptoe undoes them with a home made castellated tool and a high torque electric impact wrench (an alternative to bolting it down and swinging on a 6' breaker bar). By all accounts, not easy to shift.

When my FD went out of warranty I tried undoing mine by clamping the brake disk in a vice with soft jaws and putting a wooden block under the casting for support and using a home made castle nut tool.

With my air impact gun on max (240Nm IIRC) it just sat there laughing at me. I couldn't undo the thing with my limited resources.

I'd go for the breaker bar method with the FD in a properly fabricated fixture if I have to do it again, but that would take time to make the tool and fixture plus money.

Luckily for me I got a new FD as a goodwill gesture.

Erneman - I've sent you a PM

thanks guys. as there was so much swarf and bits of metal i will prob have to change all bearings and seals. rang motorworks for price for all and it is near 400 pounds .waiting now for breakers to ring me back with price for second hand ones . it might be cheaper to go this way and a lot less hassel and skinned knuckels. no good will from bmw as i have never been in bmw shop with the bike. i will let yous know how i got on.

hi david. have you found any more holes to fall in to :) i am trying to open pm with out any luck. :type i will have to wait to wife comes home tonight she knows how to drive one of these better than me

Hey Erneman,
What year is your GS......? I'm assuming it's an earlier model with 60,000 miles on it.
I've got an '08 FD sitting in the garage ready to go, it fits all models 04-07 but the ABS sensor is not compatible with the earlier models....
My 04 GS trashed it's FD beyond repair so I got a good will fix out of warranty luckily enough.
If you have an '08 model then your in luck!

hi tom it is an 04 model i am trying to find out how to make abs sensor compatible, if i got new 08 sensor and changed the connector plug i wonder would it work, or would the bike say no. Did you fit it on your 04 gs.?

Good stuff :thumb2 When you look at the mileage you`ve done and assuming a set of sprockets and a chain will last about 10k or so it`s slightly cheaper with a shaft drive :nenau
If someone could refurbish these for £100 or so + parts they`d make a killing :D

Sorry Erneman but not a chance mate. The ABS sensor on the newer models is not compatible with the older models due to the internal construction of the final drive itself. Swapping sensors will make no difference.

You either need an FD for the '04-'07 variants, or a rebuild of your existing unit as per the link in reply No 2.

hi pukmeister. thanks for the link earlier. if i seen it first i prob would not of started the job.i am having probs finding a 04/07 f/D. i am thinking about putting a 08 final drive in anyway as a quick fix just to get back on the road as i need the gs every day. when i put an 08 final drive in is it just the abs i loose or do i loose speedometor as well?As i lost my speedo on way home and abs light come on at the same time but i found the sensor had a pile of swarf on the end of it. (I had to ride 120 miles+ after the vibe started) p.s they should of made computer key pads like mob phones and i would be a lot quicker typing, but i am getting the hang of it.

Had mine in for a service today and been told the final drive is shafted :blast 13k miles on an 08 GS..... would be a bit cheaper for sprokets and chains.
Thank goodness for warranties... guess I'm just one of the unlucky few!

Hi, The castle nut is tight big time.
You will need a castle nut wrench but also a clamp down fixture. I also had to use a long pipe on the end of the socket bar.
Once this is off the rest of the rebuild is fairly straight forward.
I think the important thing is to catch the failing FD early before it does terminal damage. If the FD starts making horrible noises it may be too far gone to repair.

I bought the '08 final drive off ebay thinking it would be a straight swap but as stated the ABS sensor is not compatible.....you will lose ABS braking & speedo!
You still have brakes ok.....just not ABS
I used it as a quick fix also (couple of months) until I got my good will fix....done the job for me!
'04 FD's are no longer available from what I'm lead to believe, you will need an upgraded '06 FD with drain bung in it......
'08 FD is there ready to go if needed

Might be worth asking this guy on e-bay. Although he now lists on ebid aswell. HTH

tried contacting this man but he did not contact me back. motorworks are sending me out an 07 f/d with sensor still attched for £360 so i will give that a shot.should get it on monday and get it fitted on monday night.:bounce1 if it does not work i will be trying some of the other suggestions:nenau.i will post how i get on. thanks for all advice

Probably asking you to suck eggs, but if I were you I would do an oil change on that final drive during fitting, it only takes about 30 mins including dropping the FD to drain it, so yours should add 5 mins to the job. At least that way you know it has the right amount of the right grade of oil and its all fresh and new.

I believe the '07 version has a drain plug which makes it even easier.

Use Castrol SAF-XO as it is the only oil BMW recommend for these units. Plenty of info on this site if you search, including this helpful guide:

I would also recommend you closely inspect the rear drive flange for any cracking at the brake disk mounting lugs just in case.

I had a VTEC VFR from new and I sold it with 36000miles on it. The chain and sprockets were still like new. I did have a scott oiler on the bike from new.

Maybe some sports bike riders can go through chains & sprockets at 10000miles (should the sports bike ever reach this milage!) but from a tourer I would expect much more.

My 06 R1200GS has now done 53000miles and I will be dissapointed in the shaft drive fails before at least 100000miles. Cmon BMW have been using shaft drives for years there shouldn't be any problems provided maintained correctly.
