hello new here.just got my first bmw a 1150gs 2001 in mint cond. with 32000 miles on it. so far i like it but my only concern is the gearbox seems a little noisy in first and to a lesser exstent second gear.sounds like a mini cooper strait cut gear noise. please tell me this is normal. p.s. i don,t wear earplugs. thanks

See you know the answer already... wear ear plugs.

Mine makes all kinds of gearbox noises (2000 with 44K) but when I'm giving it stick all I hear is the roar.

So in summary wear ear plugs when your riding slow and take them out when riding fast.

You've made a great choice what did you have before

Blimme! That takes me back a bit!

:)

PS Don't test your alternator voltage or you're oil pressure either!

thanks miles. coming from suzuki bandit 1200 but still own 02 ducati 900i monster and suzuki drz400 supermoto\enduro.anyone else,s gearbox make that noise?

Good choice beaky!! Mines' a 2000 with 34000 on it. Makes all manner of a racket compared to a four. Havn't been able to pick up any gbox noise though, although the fuel pump/injectors seem a bit whiney but that was soon cured with a remus and y-piece!!
Welcome to the site!!!:clap

might be silly but you sure its not the tyres - if they're knobblies.

the gearbox or bevel shouldn't whine at all - any audible noise and i'd be worried.

i've noticed i sometimes get quite a loud shreeking noise that gets even worse when i take my earplugs out...
more often than not it turns out to be an upset boy racer who can't handle a massey fergusson doing him round the outside... you'll get used to it
soz don't really know what ur problem could be... maybe the disc lock?!?...

I agree, if you're sure it's a gearbox noise get it checked:( And from my expensive experiences it's best to do it sooner rather than later:eek

anyoneelse? i dont want to strip it down if thers nothing wrong with it i've only done 300 miles on it so it might just be something i have to get use to? all the gears change smoothly ,better then some jap stuff i`ve had.anyway i,ve just emptyed the oil out of the gearbox 6000 miles in there and it,s cystal clear. i drained it using the lower plug on the side of the gearbox and was surprised to find it was not magnetic.can anyone tell me if the black plug under the gearbox should be used for draining and is this magnetic? i also drained the bevalbox oil which was slightly dirty and the magnetic drain plug had some paist on it but no lumps or flakes normal i think? what do you lot think? cheers :D

gearbox oil

Ah, but did you remember to put new oil back in after draining ?. If not, then this is more than likely your problem ;)

Seriously, I would tendto agree with Motomartin & Bawdy. The transmission should not whine like that.
