And boy, was it a silly one.

Coming home through the middle of London, I was filtering up the outside of the traffic, on The Highway, past Wapping. Given the very slow nature of the traffic there, it is pretty normal to go around the wrong side of the traffic island when the other side of the road is empty. I was just starting to do that when my brain pointed out to e that there was a police van 20 metres back that I had just passed, so I stopped, halfway into the move, just before I crossed the line onto the other side of the road.

The bike behind did not, so hit me at about 30, I think.

So, I found myself punted up the road, and off the bike. When I stood up, nice Mr Policeman had emerged from his van, with several colleagues, and politely explained "You are both idiots". It was hard to argue.

He made the point that if we both accepted that there were no injuries or damage, no accident had happened, and so we did, and went on our way.

Anyway, the damage is minimal, I think. Right hand side plastic cylinder guard snapped, mirror slightly scraped, old battered luggage from the last bike probably has a new mark or two, but that's about it.

I now just have to decide if it is worth buying a new one, or if the old one should just be glued.

Oh, and despite wearing Sidi Crossfires, it feels like someone whacked my bare shin with a hammer. I suspect that I might not have been laughing so much on the way home if I had had my short boots on.

Oh well, my record of fifteen years without going down in London has been broken, so we are back now to two miles, and a half an hour incident free.

they DO do themselves SOME favours!

woo.
YOU are o.k - thats the main thing. :thumb2
there was a lot of potential for disaster there.
as for Mr Policeman...
He made the point that if we both accepted that there were no injuries or damage, no accident had happened, and so we did, and went on our way.
that was a Very reasonable, sensible and (so it would seem anyway) very rare gentleman. ;)
Nice one :thumb

I would think the fact that you saved them writing up reams of reports may have biased his judgement.....:augie

Bad luck on the shunt by the way....

I've been down in Wapping myself.... :)

It was on the a13 and someone did a u-turn across the dual carriage way from in front of a bus, dark windows- didnt see me blah blah blah

anyways- I was wearing sidi vertigo corsas. After the incident both my shins had massive bruises on them. I started thinking, cr@p boots... Until I looked at the carbon shin protectors... Both cracked in half. They took the hit of the car and I reckon distributed the impact of a greater area- saving my legs :phew:

Good that you are ok.... minor reminders of our mortality every now and then aren't so bad....

Jeez you Londoner's going the wrong side of a traffic island! :D Whatever next

Well done for surviving with only bruises.

I got done years ago for going around the wrong side of a keep left traffic island. £30 and no points, ISTR.

Poor obs for the bloke following you. Glad you're ok though!

I don't think I could bare 15years without going down in any city:augie

Poor obs for the bloke following you. Glad you're ok though!

same happened me - low speed commute in Dublin with a 50c.c. muppet rider right up me jaxie for what seemed like a mile :eek.
dunno exactly what happened - me facing front like...
but i stopped for a red light..
he didn't quite and next thing Thud - the Bike juddered a bit, but thats all - no falling off. :thumb2
i think he headbutted the topbox on the Guzzi :D.
i was laughing too much to get heavy with him - no harm to me or Guzzi / but he left with a headache. :green gri

Got to say going around the wrong side of an Island is breaking the law and if you have read the highway code, completely wrong even without traffic coming the other way. For the sake of slowing down and going through on the correct side, is minimal time delay. I think it has become one of these fads that others do it so its Ok, a bit like cyclists riding through red traffic lights!!! I'm glad you were not seriously hurt but others have not got away so lightly. I'm a Serving Police officer and often go to RTA's and deal with the aftermath. The long and short of it on two wheels we are very vunerable and don't always get a second chance! Here endeth the lesson. :rob

Although you were both on the wrong side of the road he still hit you from behind, doesn't that still count as a claim against the other rider.
If the police decide not to prosecute then that's up to them and the insurance companies can't say anything about it. Whats not up to the police is to become insurance adjudicators.
If you are happy to pay for damage to your bike caused by someone else then your a very kind person, only you pay for insurance to deal with matters like this.
Hope I haven't offended anyone but it just my view on things.
Regards,
Grimo.

Yep, I know it is illegal, hence the aborted maneuver once my brain processed what the big white van with stripes meant. As for minimal difference, though, there are some roads in London where it s not really the case, and The Highway is one of those. The lanes are narrow, so the cars are too close to squeeze between, and the junctions get blocked, so you can have a good five minutes and three phases of the lights to get around.

As one of the nice policemen in the van said "Once you decided to go that way, you should not have stopped. I'm a biker too, and we'd never pull you for that. Next time, just go for it".

Yes, it is illegal, (and obviously, the way I did it this time was very inadvisable), but as with certain other maneuvers that you'd recommend not to do outside our capital (overtaking past a junction), you just aren't going to get anywhere in London if you do not do it occasionally.

On the road in question, there is a light 100m ahead, and I'd only ever go that way around if the traffic coming the other way is stopped for that. I never go into the flow when it is coming the other way.

Anyway, another lesson learned.

I was not even really on the wrong side of the road. My front wheel was past the start of the island, but that's all.

He seemed like a nice guy, though, he'd just had a bit of a brain fart and not looked at what he was doing. I probably could have got him to pay for the damage, but the cylinder head guard was off my previous bike, was not mint, and I can afford it quite a lot more than he can.

A few years back I nudged the car in front in traffic while trying to stop someone squeezing in (who was trying to take the piss and avoid a serious queue). The guy that I hit saw that there was no real harm done, and made nothing of it, so I can view this as just paying forward what he did for me.

I am now going to take the £37 part off my brand new £11,000 bike, and try to glue it back together, after applying some strengthening coke can and a glob of araldite. This actually makes me feel like a proper biker again, like I was back when I had to save and scrimp to replace a broken chain. I feel a bit of a fraud, for some reason, now that I am (through virtue of age) able to walk into a showroom, and say "that one, please".

If its the traffic island on the Highway, just before Oddbins (or whatever its called these days). Plod have a habit (3-4 times a yesr IME) of sitting in the side-road on the eastbound side to catch people going the wrong way around the traffic island.

regular area for the plod to pull bikes over for going around the islands, with the usual tax check as well thrown in for good measure. When i got pulled about 6 months ago they must of collared 15 or so bikes in the 15 mins i was there being processed (read lectured).

I know turn right after the limehouse link instead as theres less islands and a empty bus lane.

Glad your ok though.

All bikers travelling daily in London do it. Bad luck!!!

or take the 2nd right after the LL heading westbound. Sometimes its no quicker, but it cuts out up to three sets of lights. Before heading down to the Aldgate mess.

Bad luck - but I'm glad your OK. Just after a nice trip up to God's country as well - a real bummer. :(

Yep, that's the one. A completely empty road the other way, a ridiculously slow moving queue of traffic Eastbound, and, importantly, a completely empty filter lane just past it for you to get back into, so that you are not even risking ending up squeezed up against the cars afterwards.

If ever an island called for the occasional circumnavigation, this one is it.
