Hi Mike, and welcome to the madhouse :aidan

There are 2 obvious foibles with GS gear selection. The simplest one is they have a dry clutch, so nothing spins when the clutch is disengaged. If you have problems engaging first, try letting the lever out very gently and it should gently snick in, as the innards begin to rotate and the appropriate bits rotate and line up.

Next, is the bush that the gear lever pivots on gets clogged with crud. Removing and cleaning this bush can make a big difference.

Apart from the obvious stuff, a bit more of a description of the age of the bike and how long the problem has been going on, would help.

Welcome Mike
To answer your question is they all do that there is a post about why they do it, did a search but could not find its by Steptoe i think.

The gearbox stops because its a dry clutch so the gearbox is not rotating via oil drag you have to let the clutch out a bit to engage first gear.

Hope this helps

Steve

Thank´s now that i now yhat it isn´t just my bike i can live with it.

the bike is a 2001 r1150gs with 32000 km.

I probably should start a new tread for this question but doeas anyone know if it is possible to buy aftermarket bar ends, the ones that you screw the bar end weights in, i ask because i want to fit my renthal fatbars.

When engaging first it often helps to maintain downward pressure on the gear lever whilst releasing the clutch lever. :thumb

If selection is vague take the plastic cover off your starter motor (1 screw) my input shaft to linkage was loose...

I'm new to the GS (bought an 06 1200 a couple of months ago, only my second road bike) - my own solution to this problem when the bike is straight out of the garage or at lights has been to rock the bike back and forwards slightly - is that wrong?

No problems on the move at all and I blip on down shifts (although partly just just because my bike has a Laser end can with the baffle removed:D)

best place for that question is in the GS Mods section - though this post might help. http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51923

Been using the rocking methode as long a I drive BMW's (about 15 years) and I am pretty sure it won't hurt anything.

Cheers,
