First ride out experience with no baffle!

Hi Baz , Try cleaning the calipers and also clean with brake cleaner the discs and floaters or what ever they are called those round things the discs sit on . As far as cat code plug goes I tried all combinations and found that for high end and low end power it ran best without . Every bike is different . As for braking I always used both front and rear at the same time on that bike . Nice to hear you are enjoying it . Jay

Hey Jay :thumb2

Ah... a man who knows my machine... Will post some latest pics today...

The cat code subject is a mine field and I figured you may have already been down this road. :D The link in place makes the bike seem better on the low down rev range BUT I havent taken it out for a top end run yet. So I feel sure after what you have said that I have cut some top end off in return for some additional bottom end pick-up...

Good point on the floating disks! handnt thought of that one? If one of the disks are no longer floating caused by road grit or corrosion etc that would certainly do it!

Over all the bike is fantastic! Love it to bits and gona spend time cleaning up the bike in general to make her last in this crappy weather.

Cheers, Baz.... :thumb

Pure co-incidence.

Your cross referencing things that aren't connected. Calm down and ride your bike,

Hey Steptoe... sorry mate, cant help myself :D I have always been like it with every bike I have owned and the GS has given me more enthusiasm than the long list of previous croch rockets... :rob

If I own a bike I like to know everything about it and how it works... More importantly I will not be happy until everything works EXACTLY how it was intended to and of course that wil include the odd bit a jewellery and a few trick bits along the way. :beerjug:

Speaking of "riding it" I really wanted to do the Abergavenny run but these Tourances would have been finished half way through. Gota get some rubber sorted asap hence the post regarding balancing and fitting yourself and tyre choices etc... Also i'm organising a Scotland run in the first half of 2010 so I gota get this machine up together now hence the 20,000 questions. So far we got 7 contenders for the trip but im sure some will bail out at the last minuet. Thanks mate, Baz :thumb

There are so many companies out there willing to sell JUNK claiming it will perform miracles... However the BBpower chip does sound interesting and could really open up some options.

Did you fit the chip as a result of the running issues? Maybe installing the chip has screwed the ECU? Have you moved back to the original chip?

The BBPower chip certainly isn't junk. No miracles are claimed but it does make the engine 'punchier'. I fitted one to my first 1150GS (2000 model) and loved the way it rode - I also had a K&N filter, larger snorkel, bigger diameter intake tubes (between the airbox and the TBs), after market can etc. Not to mention alloys and stickier tyres. The next two owners also loved the way the chip made the bike run (although all mods except the chip, K&N and y-piece were removed before sale) - quick but also very smooth. How much quicker than standard it's hard to say - when you spend money on performance modifications there's a tendency to see more of an improvement than perhaps is really there - you see what you want to see.

When I bought the bike I have now I told myself that I 'needed' another BBPower chip. The bike wasn't running right and I thought the chip might improve it. It didn't, but the chip has nothing to do with the problem and certainly wasn't the cause. I currently have the standard chip fitted.

If you are interested in the problem my bike (and a couple more 2002 models) have been suffering check out this thread:

- there's too much to repeat here!

There is an ECU on fleebay at the moment but its listed for a 1150 RT which I believe BMW changed the maps on to increase the top end BHP and shift the peak tourque further up the rev range?

Thanks, but I found an ECU on eBay a week or so ago and it turned up today. I'll fit it tonight and keep my fingers crossed.

As far as I was able to determine all the 1150 ECUs are the same part number so on that basis the RT one would fit a GS. I certainly can't see a heavy touring bike being tuned such that peak power and torque are shifted up the rev range - that wouldn't make sense. Anyway, it would take more than a map change to do that.

If your ECU is humped there is a good chance it is operating in limp mode?

I don't believe there's a limp-home mode built into the 1150 ECU - they're not that advanced :D My guess is a dry joint on either the lambda or temperature sensor circuits but I'll never know.

If it is operating in limp mode then it should flag up an error code if you can check the diagnostics? This would at least save spunking dollar on an ECu you may not need?

There are no error codes held in my old ECU - it's been checked. Whatever the problem, it's too subtle for the stone-age diagnostic capability to record.

If you plan to flog that chip I maybe willing to give it a go? :augie

I may do that in the new year as I'm not really so bothered about the extra few bhp as I used to be - will PM you to give you first refusal before advertising it to a wider audience. :thumb

you should have bought a 1100 then you wouldnt have spent all your time fuckin about like you are:comfort

Cat Code Subject... Pics I just couldnt resist!

You may notice that the diagram shows all the pin connections upside down!? Just turn the diagram page around and it matchs the available pin connections in the socket.

I'm still gona try to find out what the stanadard maps provide and what pin configurations are required... I know its not going to make bugger all difference but it would be nice to know...

Baz what the hell are you trying to achieve? you have a fat lardy chain smokin farting bike, and you want it to be something it aint??

leave it alone, or change something that really makes a difference

lights
suspension
seat

there

now pack it in

:rob

OK.. Harry, you're right, maybe im stuck in the loop of modifying from all the croch rockets...

I dont want it to be a Super-moto and I love the fact its a quarter tonne tourquey tank! I think I just get caught up in the technical side of it all... Probably because I drive a PC all day the GS lets me get my hand dirty...

So lights one day but not too bothered as it has a HID in the dipped beam the seat is a must and suspension maybe but my legs are not that long.

TYRES!

Thanks for your time guys :thumb

Do a search, it has all been done years ago. :blast

There is only the one configuration that has any effect.
