How far over the 500-600 miles before the first service do people go? Due to the dealer not being able to fit me in for another week or so I will be going well over the 600 miles before the first service. It's just that time of year and the workshop is very busy and I like to ride my new bike.

Skudd, I was just looking at this myself and the manual states 300 - 750 miles.

I asked a similar question when I got my 1250. The advice I was given then was they prefer you do more than the 600 rather than less, to keep it below1k and stick to the running in rev limits until it's been serviced.

If it’s the dealer’s fault then I would imagine they would wave any limitation .it’s getting ridiculous now , all the dealers are unable to fit people in due to all the recalls they are having to deal with .
I suppose they are a victim of their own success . The gs is still the most popular large capacity bike sold and they are producing them as fast as they can so maybe quality is starting to suffer .

Bought mine, went to europe and took it in with 1800 miles on the clock - no issues

The only issue I see here is IF something goes wrong later on ,during the warranty period, it's the classic dealer ammo " HA, it wasn't serviced at the correct interval and this has caused this and that, Sorry sir "

1,000 miles is fine, 2,000 may be a little too much

Well thanks for the replies, So Wray bike night is back on the schedule, I love a good Hog Roast as is a bimble out on Sunday to I don't know yet.

I did mine at 500 miles. Used BMW oil and filter. Oil in the rear gearbox was nasty dirty with a lot of black powder-like particles. The magnet was packed full too. I ended up changing the gear oil 3 more times (change, ride 50 miles, change again...) to flush all the crap from there.
You can probably do 1000 miles on the first engine oil but change the gear oil as soon as possible. Don't ride more than 600 miles on it.

BTW, it's very easy to do the first service yourself and save a lot of money. It's VERY easy! 30 minutes tops.
I bought a GS911 unit to reset the service reminder. Your dealer can probable reset it for you after you do the service.
