I have completed 600 miles and am going to send the steed in for its first service. Anyone know roughly how much it will cost at a main dealer / would it be worth doing it myself?

It shouldn't cost a fortune.

Doing your own servicing whilst within the warranty period is not a good idea IMO. You will have zero chance of any repairs or goodwill gestures from either the dealership or BMW UK should your bike develop any 'issues'.

Whilst my bike was within its warranty period it made sense to let the dealer do it and keep the all important warranty going, which I had to use on several occasions (mine was one of the original R1200GS models imported as the very first batch of dealer demos.)

I have done my own servicing for the past couple of years, my rationale being that even by selling my bike at a lower resale value due to lack of official service history, I will not lose money by doing it myself plus I know exactly what has been done and when.

I also enjoy the satisafaction of a job well done and feel a bond with my bike and the confidence to repair it at the roadside (or help others) should the need arise.

£150 sucks, only new bike i've ever had to pay for and the count is 14 from 2000:thumb,if they had made it clear i'de have got it included in the price:blast, they'll give it back to me over the next 2 years though one way or another:augie, then its new bike time and i'll be f**ked if its a BMW,and no only do it yourself if you want to void your warranty

FSS, don`t know why you are bitching when you could have ASKED about service costs when you bought the bike. If you are going to buy something else because you had to pay for a service, you`ll never be pleased. Easy to blame others when you`ve fecked up. Grow up will you?.

Anyway SJPB1982, ring the dealer and get a quote. It should be £150 max I would have thought. Don`t do it yourself as you will probably void the warranty as already stated.

Doing the servicing yourself or getting it done at an independent does not void the warranty. You do have to use oe parts though and at the correct schedule. We have european law to thank for that.

My first service was parts only, labour free. Came to £40.

It invalidated the warranty on my BMW and my jap bike, oh and if i don't keep my used approved 11** serviced by BMW then the years warranty will not be valid if i had a breakdown.
I suspect it would be pretty damn hard to get BMW to replace any parts under a good will gesture after the warranty period if the bike had been serviced by an independant garage.
If anybody knows any different now is the time to speak. :thumb

Most dealers will do this service labour free which means the total price should be no more than £120. If it is more ask why and say you want them to do the same and match the same as other dealers such as Barnstormer who do just that. To charge labour on that first 600 mile check is not right in my view.

I'm talking about a manufacturers warranty on a new bike, a second hand bike that is covered by an aftermarket warranty, either through a dealer or through an insurance company is a different matter.

A warranty on a new bike cannot be voided by having it serviced at a non-franchised dealer or by servicing it yourself as long as oe parts are used and the recommended schedules kept.

And if a bike is out of warranty then how can it be voided? :nenau

Its not the bike i'm pissed with its just i don't like being treated like a smuck, and my GSA isn't really much good, been out and bought a triumph to get some kicks

I think the point is that if it has a dealer service stamp all the way through, there is no opportunity for a dealer to quibble. If the engine goes pop and you're looking at an enormous bill, do you really want to have to struggle to prove you used oe parts, correct service schedule, checked diagnostics and - perhaps most difficult - prove you had the appropriate skills to do the tricky stuff. If I was BMW, there has to be a myriad of ways to challenge it all for a big claim.

So having it serviced at the main dealer does provide a little extra peace of mind.

Now mine is well out of waranty, I do it myself - saves a fortune, plus I know it's all done properly. (Even when it was being done at the dealer, I still went round and checked the torque, checked the clearances etc.)

had mine done today (get it free in the deal)

the oil is changed ("special" cutting in oil)
valve's checked
"nut 'n' bolt" check
test ride
general look over

is said to be one of the most important....

and IMO £150 is a small price to pay for piece of mine getting the bike started to a good life

take it to the dealer and get the moneyeeeeees out :augie

No offence intended,
It sounds to me that you would be better off selling your GSA as your hart really isnt in the bike. I had my first service free and had a deal for the second at half price. At the end of the day the bikes are not cheap to buy in the first place, so why did you think the services would be.
Grimo,:mmmm

Valves checked? Wouldn't have thought so. The head would be retorqued though.

The longest job would be waiting for it to cool to torque the head.

I assume you bought your bike from Clarks? If so, the 600 mile service should be 'free' - you just pay for the oils.

.

So how much do you think will be saved by having an independent do the 1st service work. They don't work for free, and they wouldn't have any costs for servicing the bike built into the purchase price as they didn't sell you the bike.

And then try finding a dealer who'd be willing to take on any warranty work for a bike that they haven't serviced or that hadn't been in the dealer network for it's first service.
The independent isn't going to do any warranty work if needed.

If someone brought their bike to me for a 1st service i'd send them to a BMW dealer. I don't need the headache from the owner if something goes wrong and a warrenty claim is needed.
EEc rules mean diddly squat in the real world, and BMW have a bigger diddly than an owner if it's needed.

Don't particularly disagree with any of that, hence why mine gets serviced at a bmw franchise.

My point was that, under european law, getting it serviced elsewhere or doing it yourself does not void the warranty. If you have an issue getting a dealer to look at it under warranty then you could go direct to BMW.

My previous suzuki was serviced from new by an independent, it did need some (simple) warranty stuff doing which was done by a local suzuki dealership.
