First service

Exactly what I do - rode the WC last time - pleased to get back on mine afterwards too..

Last time I rode the k1600gt for a day and, boy, was I pleased to be back on the GSA. Of course it could have been the individual bike I was on, tyre choice, tyre war and pressures could have been to blame.

I would say this though, just because one salesman let the side down on that occasion doesn't mean that the service side is rubbish. Unless you know for sure that they are no good why not try them first and make your own mind up ?

Where a good relationship with the dealer is really important is when you try for an out of warranty claim. At that time the dealer will be the one pushing on your behalf and for sure the bike would have to have been serviced on schedule at a BMW dealer or they would not even consider the claim. (I am not talking about claims within warranty, only claims after the warranty has expired).

On the flip side I have a friend who never has his cars dealer serviced and he does buy them new. His view is that the loss of value from lack of service history is insignificant compared to the money he would pay on dealer servicing. He just keeps a eye on the cars and does things as and when they need doing. It's not my style but it works for him. I'd like to bet that a lot of Japanese sports bike riders operate that way!

Incidentally I read recently that BMW are not planning to discontinue the oil cooled engine ant time soon, it will continue in the 9-T and the R1200r. At its present power level it meets current at future regulations.

GOOD!

I have too travel 120 miles to my nearest dealer meaning a day off work plus the fuel costs. Ohh BTW I didnt buy the bike from them because they didnt bother their arse to get back to me when I asked them to supply a new bike, so why would I support them ? They didnt help me when I was looking for a bike.

Can't comment on that, but...

...so its Dundee the dealership that didn't want my money that is my nearest...

JC's at Dundee will collect your bike if you ask, although I don't know what they charge. The cost might well be less than a lost day at work plus your fuel, but I have no idea - I'm the person that collects and delivers bikes, but I just do what they tell me. And they didn't tell me to post this, neither will I get any thanks for doing so... :blast

I work for the service department, who will be more than happy to take your money. :D
Having said that, I see you now have someone local who'll do the job for you so this may all be redundant info...

Same to you. Thats the problem up here, we are miles and miles away from the main dealers, i wouldn't use the one in Inverness 35 miles away because ive heard several horror stories about them, the Aberdeen one doesn't do bikes anymore, so its Dundee the dealership that didn't want my money that is my nearest. A guy that used to have a place in North Wales has set up just a few miles from me and his operation looks the dogs danglies, he gave me a guided tour on Saturday and i was impressed. He used nothing but Castrol oil and oem filters etc. He also FOC changes the diff oil every service regardless and he checks the throttle bodies and TPS etc everytime so id say he is pretty thorough wouldnt you ? There is no requirement to use main stealers for servicing as you know as long as OEM filters etc are used so i think given the time and distance id have to travel i will give him a go.

Used Calderton's for years and never had a problem, they will give you a demo bike on loan if you ask in advance whilst they service yours. Last time was a few weeks before Christmas, brakes failed on a Saturday morning whilst close to Inverness, popped in on the off chance the bike mechanic was in. He checked bike there and then diagnosed the problem, sales man came out and pointed to the row of demo bikes, said "pick a bike and keep it until yours is sorted" now that's good service. Left my bike and picked it up a few days later and put several hundred miles on their WC. I've bought two bikes from them and had my last 4 BMWs serviced by them and have never had cause to complain. Strangely enough I had a similar problem with Dundee that you experienced, I wanted to buy a bike from them but despite a visit to the showroom and phone calls no one got back to me, on all occasions I was told there was no one available to deal with my enquiry that put me off using them. Be interested to know where the new place is near us, is it the one in Keith?

But I would always give a dealer a go and make my own mind up rather than go a long way at my inconvenience based on someone else's experience. We all have our own perception on what constitutes good and bad service.

Yes thats it. I have heard good and bad about them but he gave me a guided tour one saturday for about an hour. Said it would be £99 for first service went on to say he did tps and throttle bodies and diff oil every service. Said also if annual service was just around time of mileage service he would do a safety check and oil and filter a stamp service book for warranty.

Realistically it would be nice if these running in services were free, after all they are a bit of a shake down service.

I've had free 1st services with, Yamaha on my first road bike. Honda on two CBR's and Suzuki in 2007. I never asked, it was just part of the running in etc.

Have these always been charged for, or is it a new standard? & if new do you currently have to pay for this with other brands?

Charged for every feckin thing with this lot, unless you can blag the first one free when you buy the bike. Havent heard of them "giving it away" lol

I've never paid for a first service on a new bike, the last two new bikes I bought were both BMWs from Calderton's Inverness and the first service was negoiated as part of the deal, I thought it was a standard thing. I guess if you don't ask for it you don't get it:nenau

Ok, thanks. I've never paid for a first service, so assumed they were free - shame they are charged for.

I remember my local Honda dealer being a little aggrieved at giving me a free 1st service, as I bought the bike
From Steve King at Abingdon Honda (I bought a few bikes, from him including my blade - good to deal with) and brought it back over to the Island.
