First Shock of owning a GS

Been there!

Neither is retightening the cylinder head bolts; it's basically an engine and shaft drive oil change.

I am old enough to remember when Citroen stopped checking head bolt torque on their air cooled boxer twins. Had lots of problems with poor running, mainly cause by tight valve clearances that previously would have been checked after the heads were re torqued. Even a few engine failures. Hope the same does not apply here.

the twin cam has a different head gasket that doesn't compress. that's what i was told anyway.

on an airhead there is the additional problem of the pushrods effectively getting longer as the gasket compresses. this closes the valve clearance dramatically.

When I took my 2010 GS in for it's 600ml service and was asked for £180 , I said all other bikes I've had, the 600 svs was free. She said "welcome to the world of BMW".......:comfort

That's nothing compared to what KTM charge for a first 600 mile service

I never quite get the cost of bike servicing.
I have just taken my 55 plate Honda Accord to a main dealer and had a full service.
First FULL service it has had in 65000 miles.
Up untill now it has had the odd oil and filter, one set of plugs and an air filter.
I winced a bit at a bill a few pence short of £300 but to be honest that'll be it now for another god knows how long.
Other expences in that 65000 miles ... set of brake pads and some tyres

The few times I took my 1150 into a BMW dealer I never left the bloody place without spending £250-300.

Was that with Mike at Cardiff Motorrad?

That's where you need to go:thumb

Perhaps i will on future services, but being the first i think i had better take it to Riders!----A bit of good news though, after chatting on the phone to the salesman i have brought it down to £150, still dear in my books !

Just checked my receipt from Allan Jefferies and the cost for the 600 mile service was £100. I seemed to remember this was a flat rate they charged if you bought the bike from them

Service costs

My MINI Cooper S cost me £150 (TLC) when I bought the car 4 years ago.
I took it in today for it's 36000 mile service. No charge. They even let me have a JCW Roadster to play with overnight. Seems to 2 half's of BMW have different business models......

Seriously though, a 14k bike means bills matching that price tag. Maintaining the vehicle throughout it's lifetime must be a part of the buying process.

I have an 05 GS now, I do it all myself. I wouldn't mess with a twin cam though lol

The way it was explained to me by bahnstormers Bracknell was that the labour cost of the 600 mile service was expected to be covered by the selling dealer margin on the bike by BMW. So if it's the same place you bought it from that's naughty. If its another dealer, that hasn't had your custom already, then I'd imagine they are at liberty to charge normal rates. Probably an hour or two to go over the bike, and change the oils which are not covered.

Seems like a very good reason to buy a bike with a few miles on the clock.

Makes me even happier when I consider I service mine myself (and it always gets an extra bit of TLC when I do it) :rob

Don't pay any more than £100, if they won't do it for this then shop around, plenty will

good luck with that.

if the place you bought it from won't do it at a discount, i can't see some other dealer doing it.

i paid £100 at Williams in Manchester for the 600 miler. All service costs discussed,discounts/accessories asked for..and got..before signing on the 14.5k dotted line.
Never paid anyone to service any vehicle iv owned before, but did and will with this one till the warranty is up.
