Reliving bike trips whilst sat at my desk....
Not having the cash for a loud can, I've just bought a load horn!

I ordered a Stebel Magnum 136 dB horn over the internet from one of the links on this site and it arrived in no time. I went for the spade connector model for ease of fitting only to find, when I removed the BMW original Bosch item from my 1150 GS, that there was some perculiar, but neat, plug connector on this original horn, and not spade female connectors I was expecting.

Has anyone fitted one of these or any other "spaded" horn?

Can I get a "BMW connector-to-spade connector" gizmo to bridge the gap?

I don't want to butcher the GS wiring to fit spade connectors in case I ever want to refit the original.

Any advice welcome: I was very much looking forward to on-board tinnitus...

I very much doubt there is such an adaptor.

I can't remember what it looked like when I did mine, but can you insert a pair of crimped spade connectors in there to make the link??

I just cut mine off, allowing as much spare wire as I could so in theory I could reconnect the old plug with crimp connectors (tube type)...then I crimped and sealed two female spades on the ends.

I've since lost the connector itself, but TBH I can't imagine that I'd want to replace the original....let's face it, it was rubbish and nobody's going to be asking for the old one to be put back on if you ever sell......it ain't worth worrying about IMO.

PS take care checking you have proper clearance all around the horn after fitting...it's easy to mount it so that it knocks on things under compression....bounce the bike up and down on full lock both ways to check it's all clear when you're done.

:)

Cheers for that.

I think it may well come to that, but for once that there is a nice tidy connector on even the horn, it almost seems a shame (can you tell I've just bought the bike?).

Still, I've emailed the supplier, and they may have a suggestion, or I may try pulling the old horn apart to see if this plug can be removed from it.

If not its wire cutters a-go-go, and sod it.

Its a lot louder: will I need to change any fuses?
(electrics are not my strong point...)

Just fitted one to my bike, a straight swap apart from the connector. Just cut it off and solder/crimp the spades on. Believe me you won't use the old one again after you hear the magnums nice loud PAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRPPPPPP!!!! :D

If you use the flat metal strips that come with the Magnum on the original mounting bolt you will have to open the hole on one end up a tad to get it on. I was going to use the original bar but couldn't get the piggin nut to budge. :eek

There is no need to change the fuse for the Magnum - and yes, it is a lot louder.

Fitted mine last week. It's well worth buying a proper crimping set.

Did you get the Magnum from motor world £13.99 ?
I agree the standard one is crappy, i had thought about some air horns but not sure if there is enough room to mount a compressor, i need some thing to give the knucklehead car drivers a fright when they pull out as you are overtaking !
has anyone done it or is the magnum loud enough

suggestions please

thanks

Well, I took the advice and checked the garage for spare bullet connectors and....

wer-haaayyy! Won't see next door's cat for a good six months after the test run I performed!

Yes, I think that will do nicely.

The wiring is not as well protected as the original, and its a bit longer, so its now all tucked under the head-stock for protection.

RE Air-Horns: beware they are a b@stard to fit. The last bike I fitted them to was a TDM and they seem to have bags of room under the front fairing until you try to stuff a compressor and two horns where they won't get soaked!

I would suggest that a small hole is drilled near the bottom of the horn (in the plastic) to allow any water to drain away. Not my idea, read it on this site before I put my Magnum on.

Paarp!

Driving in two lanes of traffic today. Lane ahead (not mine) blocked by a van unloading. Silly cow in a hatchback in the blocked lane just starts to drift across to my lane trying deliberately to push me out of the way - three loud PAAAARPS on the Stebel horn and she was back in her own lane in double quick time!

Great piece of kit - never mind the cat next door, the first time I tested it in the garage I jumped like hell! :D :thumb

Cheers,

Psyko

Warthog, gis a hand!

Warthog, just ordered one from NN today and fell over this thread.

Should get here in a few days (part of a few other bits, some not in stock).

Any chance of some moral support to install. Only down the road from you and electrics really screw me up (particularly the CAN bus thing).

Cold beer in the fridge!

Call me if you get a chance on 0118 969 4399.

Skippy.

And to add another bit of vocal support THIS HORN IS LOAD AND EXCELLENT !! and you DO need to shout ! Good enough for India...no really.
All you folk that don't like hacking your wires consider buying a proper crimping set of pliers - no not those crappy ones for the blue plastic rubbish - worth it for the shear pleasure of creting connects that match original fitting. And PS, the spades and covers with the Steibel are better than the usual crap you get with accessories like this. (I got crimper and connections years ago from Merv Plastics, not sure if still going, never regretted it - top proffessional job every time

Just fitted mine this afternoon,as an earlier thread suggested i used the
bracket of the old horn as the hole diamemeter where it bolts to the head stock is smaller on the new horn.
I chopped of the BMW connector and crimped on spades to fit , the only problem i had was that the leg of the loom for the horn was very short,
to position the new horn in the same place as the old one i had to cut back the covering of the main loom which gave me some slack for the horn wires , (Fritz must have been feeling mean when he made my loom!)

Tried it out and agree, its nice and loud !

What is the Stebel Nautilus like? I want something which shouts "get out of my way, ya feckers"

Maybe I had better make a recording?

I fitted a Nautilus recently, admittedly I would expect it's a bit louder than the Magnum (loud as as very loud thing actually - you can see the cagers quoting the Mayor of Hiroshima)

But it did blow the standard 7.5A fuse, so I popped in a 10A and so far no problems
