I'm planning to buy a shiny new 12GSA shortly. I've decided what toys I want fitting on delivery and what can wait but I'm in 2 minds about luggage.

The dealer quoted me £850 for a full set of BW luggage including the top box plate (but not the pannier hangers!)

Now I'm not shy of spending when I have to but that seems a lot that would buy many other shiny things, especially as I already have a pair of very serviceable Givi Maxia panniers. 50 litres each and can be used individually as a top box. I'm not planning on crossing the Ghobi any time soon so it doesn't have to be aluminium boxes for now.

I've done a search on here and gone through the old threads about luggage but I'm not much wiser. Has anyone any experience of fitting/using Givi Maxia's on a GSA? Do you need to butcher the bike to get the rack/hangers to fit? Do they stick out a ridiculous amount? :nenau

A virtual pint goes to the most sensible response

I have the standard 12GSA panniers and a Maxia topbox, just went and took a few rough measurements and I don't think it will work very easily. For it to work at all you will have to drop the can down and I don't know of a kit to do that for the 12GSA.
The BM panniers are 280mm wide and the Maxia looks to be around 330mm.

Maybe you are missing the point about owning a 12GSA. First you need to spend a fortune buying it then you have to throw lots of money at it at regular intervals. Penny pinching before you have it is not the way to go! :D:beerjug:

Hi Mate,

I have two Givi side panniers, the old E35 litre (and a Maxia 52L top box) on my GSA and after worrying that the pannier rails wouldnt line up to the bikes fixings and thinking that the brackets they sent with the E250 top plate were all wrong it worked fine, I just made sure I installed the rails "loosely" at first and then work round the bike tightening everything up. I also replaced the stock bolts with hardened steel for extra peace of mind. After all that its rock solid and havent had any trouble with them at all despite loading them up to the rafters on recent long trips etc. Photos on Post 16 in the thread below.

PS - And they dont leak:hide

I'm pretty sure the GIVI tubular case holders will fit the same as on my standard GS, they wrap around the exhaust and stick out further on that side. 50 litre panniers will stick out a bit further than my 36Litre ones but to my mind unless you A: travel the world or B: Just want the look, they are hard to ebat for real world useable luggage.

Have a look on the GIVI website for exact part numbers etc.

I've seen this done, but the panniers were fitted to Touratec racks - apparently this is stronger than ther Givi rack.

Cheers guys, thanks for the advice. No doubt all will become clearer when I've actually got the bike so I'll give it some more thought.

Shenzi, I hear what you say but it's also about getting the most bangs for your bucks. Why buy another set of luggage if I could make use of what I already own :nenau I have no elusions that the £850 potentially saved by not buying the BMW luggage would be "saved" - it would just be spent on other bits :D
