Fitting HID on an 1150Adv, A numptie's guide

I'll be out there again to tidy it all up as son as I've done a few miles on it to make sure there are no problems, replace all the white cable ties with black and seal it all up , re-route the cables a bit and generally tidy up the whole installation ;)

Bet ya don't:augie:augie Once it's all covered with desert shite you won't be able to find the new bits.

Superb post!

I am not planning in upgrading my 1150GS with HID as I rather make sure I don't have anything legally questionable. But, this post is so explanatory (and it is pure entertainment and educative post) that it would be a shame not to put it in the Hall of Wisdom.

No Matt, I'm afraid not......

We've got a spaniel as well, and although the mad bouncing up and down on the spot is a good act, it all sort of falls apart when they start running big circles yapping at the imaginary squirrels they're chasing......though if you could find one with enough brain cells to hold tools for you, the soft mouth would come in vary handy.

A Spaniel with a brain though?? :blast

:D

Hmm, I feared that this might be the case....
Unfortunately, our cocker's previous owner didn't order the 'brain' option, so no hope there :D

Sorry Fanum did not see the thread earlier:o, a few pointers, I always remove the lights so the Burner slides in spot on as it has to be just right, it does scrape a bit but if in line it will go, but no problem with a rat tail file.
Good point on the 22.5 hole that is what I do, and I remove the two pins first.

And finally I put the ballast behind the High beam light, also another reason the take the lights out, it just fits and holds down with the Dual Lock, keeps out of any weather then.

Say Hi to Rosi for me :thumb2

Excellent write up :clap

Re the legality issue I read somewhere that the regs quoted above apply to 4 wheeled (or more) vehicles and that there is no equivalent current regulation relating to bikes. As such the HID light source is simply not on the list of approved light sources, different from not being legal.

It would be a shame to see some clown trying to outlaw what is a superb safety modification. Of course we have to remember we are in the EU so HID's will probably be made illegal on bikes with a mandatory return to the use of acetylene:D

I needed to file the housing for the headbeam on my 1150 but not the dip. Being a bit paranoid I used a diamond file and only filed from "in to out" so that no swarf fell into the reflector to go rusty.

I also found that I could locate the ballasts each side of the headstock under the front of the tank, a bit less exposed there. JUst had to slightly re-arrange the wiring loom.

i put my ballasts where the abs goes, (mines non abs),had to lengthen the cables though, 6000 miles trouble free

And did you lengthen the silicon cables to the burners? Very brave if you did the factory are totally against it, they supply me the correct silicon extensions for the job, it's one cable not to cut, the power cable is fine to do what you want with :thumb2

Flied brollocks :D

i used the leads off a multimeter, its the same stuff, and soldered them, then silicone wrap to cover them, im a trained sparky :thumb

I used two bits of silicone wire from some old TVs line output transformers (final annode is ~35kV) and put mine (x2) under the ABS pump.

Not all volt meter cable is the same spec though (Argos vs. Fluke) as the strike/arc voltage on the HIDS is about the same as TV, but the sustained voltage is about 85v so probably not a problem :) But don't do it if you don't know what you are doing..

No need to solder/wrap the connections though as you can buy the same OEM waterproof connectors online. Mine were a few quid but I forget where I got them now. :(

Anyway for the safe route, I think Les sells them :)

i soldered them as it was always gonna be permanent ,silicone wrap , free from work,:thumb
yes, use a GOOD multimeter lead:thumb

no fried borrocks then:D

Sorry Fanum,

But to count as a true "Numpties Guide" you should have reminded true numpties (ie me) to reconnect the BMW connector to the bulb unit cover, or the true numpty (ie me) might spend a while panicking about why his expensive new lights don't work...:blast:blast

Having said that, thanks for your guide, it helped to refer to it during the swap. No golden stupid, but strange how many of the cats decided they wanted to sit on bike and help by knocking tools onto the garage floor.

I started the hole with a small drill, then quickly realised that the yellow and brown wires fitted to the inside of the plastic piece would be obstructing the hole drill, so I pried them out from the inside with a flat blade screwdriver, laid them aside and drilled the hole out

good write up Fanum:thumb

For others-be careful prising out the yellow and brown wires. I broke the plastic retaining/insulating shroud on the brown wire trying to prise it out so a botch up repair was required using insulation tape whilst awaiting a replacement plastic dip beam cover costing £13.00 from Motorworks - that was after I had tried carefully cutting out the 1 inch hole knowing that the wires were obstructing the hole. The hole saw suddenly dropped through and bingo - shredded wire insulation :blast :(
Good light though - definitely gets motorist's attention during daytime

many thanks

just used this guide to fit a hid to dipped headlight , great help :thumb2
got to agree with Les though very simple just to remove headlights makes the job a lot easier and bulb went straight in :D
off to sort spotlights now

Top man Fanum!

I left the lights in place and had it done in half hour, Top man!
Thanks

I know it`s getting boring but thanks for the installation guide Fanum it saved me tryin to use my brain on a satdi :thumb

Getting the hole sorted took me the longest as I don`t have a make hole bigger tool but all fited now and tie wrapped up.
