Hi all, hope someone can help.

Just got new locks for the panniers (Bmw system), followed the instructions on the packet!! and now I find that the tumblers where all matched and fitting into the pannier.

BUT now the pannier is locked and the key will not open it again?

I have managed to fit the lock and now need to drill it out?

Is there another way of removing the lock with the key?

I haven't done the other lock as I am now in brain melt down mode

Any one able to help???

Thanks Bumble....BUT

I have installed as shown, but now the lock is locked with the handle down and I CANNOT get it to open again.

Any ideas

ANYBODY PLEASE!!!!!!

Commuter......

You don't say whether the locks match the ignition key of the 'bike or whether you have a separate key for the cases......?

Is your case locked to the bike, or just locked, freestanding?

In any event, it seems that you have the incorrect key for the locks you've fitted.

Drilling out the old lock is a somewhat hazardous exercise, in that you run the risk of damaging the plastic of the case, possibly rendering it useless for receiving another lock.

My suggestion would be to take the case/bike to a locksmith to firstly remove the lock barrel (he will either 'pick' the lock or use a skeleton key). He will also be in the best position to tell you if you have the correct keys, which can be easily checked once the lock barrel is removed.

If there is a mismatch of keys/lock he will either cut keys to match the lock or file the lock tumblers to match the keys that you have.

This will be much more useful than the BMW instructions: http://sd.znet.com/~hays/rekey.html

Thanks for the info

Thanks,

I bought a new set of locks for the bike from the dealer and tried to match them to my key for the ignition, followed the same lock instructions as you have shown and found that the pannier is locked (free standing off the bike). The new lock went in easily enough but now as I said it will not fit the system.

Off to a locksmith or BMW dealer I think. I've had enough

Will keep you updated.

Locks

Fitted locks myself to Beemer cases last week and thought I had same problem.

Don't panic!

If the lock was not 'keyed' properly, you would not have been able to insert it into the case as per the BMW instrutions.

Did he barrels slide into the cases as they should? If you had to 'pick' each tumbler into place as you slid the barrel home then the sequence of tumblers is wrong - they should slide home up to the 'pawl' tumbler. If wrong - time for the locksmith.

I found my locks to be VERY stiff from new and only one of my keys would fit. The solution was to be quite rough with the lock, running the key in and out of the lock many times. This appeared to 'take the corners off' the new tumblers and all the keys now work the locks fine. Try this before you resort to expensive locksmiths!!

Hope this is of use.

Cheers, Rick.
