It's a simple enough task....so I thought.

1) tank off
2) old battery out
3) new battery in
4) tank on
5) start engine

Everything was going fine until point 5). Ignition on , lights shining brightly but not a peep from the fuel pump and the usually whirring and clicking we have all become accustomed to , the starter button was dead and there were no signs of life

I check the fuses , rechecked the battery terminals were connected , fiddled with the key, scrached my and had a smoke but nothing helped......so I phoned MiGSel who immediately pointed me to the alarm system.

Indeed the remote activation on the alarm wasn't working so a quick reset of the alarm system with the override key and all was well again and the bike started. Removing the battery simply tells the alarm system to block the whole starting system .

Moral of this story is don't panic - if in doubt phone MiGSel :D

So what's his number? :D

(PS - dunno if this applies to your bike, but on the 1200 the manual says you need to reset the TPS after interrupting the battery power. To do this you just switch on the ignition and open the throttle fully a couple of times.)

Yup - same on mine ....but I didn't need to ask MiGSel about that ;) Good point to mention though :thumb

I'm afraid I can't tell you his number - if I tell you I'd have to kill you :shoot:

Just had the battery off on mine (1150) but didn't reset the TPS, seems to run the same only problem was the piggin throttle cable had jumped out of its guide agian on refitting the tank.
But I remembered it this time and didn't strip every thing down again.:D

Do I need to reset the TPS and if so how is it just a matter of opening the throttle fully a couple of times or is it more complicated than that.

I presume the answer to the first thread is yes.:D :D :D

Fitted a new battery on my GS1150 last week. Just propped up the back end of the tank and the battery came out and the new one slipped in dead easily! Oh, and I didn't have any problems with the TPS. I suspect it may have been the alarm system itself which proved problematical.

The TPS has been discussed on a US site. Apparently you can reset it by removing fuse 5 and leaving the bike for 20 odd minutes, then turnon the electrics (but don't start the engine) and twist the throttle fully a couple of times. Here is what they say:

"Disconnecting the battery deletes all entries (e.g. faults, settings) stored in the Motronic control unit's memory. Loss of settings can temporarily impair the operating characteristics when the engine is restarted.
· Switch on the ignition
· Fully open the throttle once or twice
· The Motronic registers the throttle-valve positions

One thing to note, if you yank fuse #5 out, LEAVE it out at least for a couple of minutes. I'd say 10 should do it. The reason is you need time for the voltage in the moronic brain to bleed down to zero volts. If you don't wait long enough the residual charge inside the brain will not let it reset..... It's similar to a CMOS reset for your computer. The residual voltage HAS to bleed down to zero volts. The minimum threshold voltage is under 2 volts for most of these type of circuits".
