fitting steptoes headguards?

Just had a pair arrive but they only have 2 holes per side and 4 bolts, no holes in bottom. All threads I've read say there are 3 fixing points

nope the one under the cylinder is not drilled out you dont need to use it

the only guidance I can find is this:

Bakerman ( and colt) also had a fitting problem . I fitted bakermans in front of him at the EM event in 5 mins without any decent tools.

Fit the underneth/bottom bolts first ( don't tighten them), then the bolts at the rear ( again don't fully tighten them), then push up the whole headguard so the front hole aligns, then tighten everything up.

You can bend the bottom arms ( do it gently) , but every single guard has been fitted to my bike before sending them out to make sure they fit.

must have changed the design since then.

Think I'll try filing away at them first so they mate without touching the fins first!

not sure how they'll stand up without polishing or painting but I'll see how it goes.

Are your guards fitted with the lengths of rubber strands as supplied by Steptoe, these dampen the jarring effect of a fall and help maintain the integrity of the head guards themselves.

You've failed the first very simple test. Which means get someone to fit them for you.

Later guards have just the two mounting points per guard. You can drill out the lower mount but it doesn't need to be fixed securely in place.

Was the simple test to ignore the instructions that say fit them to the ridges?
I stuck them inside the grooves a few days ago, they didn't want to bend to a tight radius mind, hope i did it right, ridden each day and they seem secure. Very happy to have got rid of the crash bars, can't say I'm looking forward to putting them to the test though.

Don't worry, I and probably many others have done this on your behalf.

I dropped my GS with a 3/4 full tank of fuel onto a slab of fine Derbyshire rock whilst off-roading. They work. Absolutely no damage to the bike, just scratches and wee dents on the head protectors themselves, which I had only just had powder coated a couple of months ago
