Just noticed the coating on the front cover behind the alternator drive belt cover appears to be flaking off rather drastically - also on the RH rocker cover. Is this somthing BM will sort under warranty? I've used the bike all year round but been careful to wash it fairly regularly

First minor hiccup in 11k...

I've had an 1150 fork brace and a 1200 engine cover replaced under warranty due to the paint peeling, so it should not be a problem if the bike is still covered.

Alternator cover is a known problem (which doesn't make it any less infuriating). There are some people on here who have had two or three replacements. I had mine done under warranty a few months ago. Two dealers agreed to do it with no problem at all.

(Ditto the fork brace on my 1150 a year or two ago.)

Front cover is indeed a known fault and I am in the middle of trying to get mine repaired. Basically in august last year I noticed a whinning noise from the alternator/ front cover area. Suspecting it to be the altenator bearing I took it to the dealer who ran the bike with the belt off and confirmed the noise wasn't related to the altenator. The bike has been back and forth 3 times since and has been with the dealer since mid November! Been on to BMW UK who just this week appear to have got to the bottom of it. Apparently there was an issue on early bikes with corrosion due to noise suppression foam on the back of the cover holding water. The design was amended effectively doing away with the foam. a new supplier was sourced who produced the covers with a more corrosion resistant coating however somewhere along the line the tolerances for the case have been altered ever so slightly so effectively when the cover is torqued up it applies pressure to the crankshaft causing a whinning noise (similar to a worn bearing). BM UK have assured me the 'all' new case is on its way to my dealer this week so should have the bike back before the end of the month. If anyone is having similar probs let me know as I have all the correspondence etc including a £250 voucher to be used in the dealer for my inconveinience! The dealer has been first class and I've had a loan bike all this time however BMW have been slow to get to the bottom of this. Hopefully it will be resolved soon but I'm not holding my breath!
