Flappy Valve

Hi
Should I be able to rotate the flappy valve in my twin cam exhaust open and shut with the actuator thingy attached?
 
It cycles when you switch the ignition on, so you should be able to see if it is moving/seized. If you try to move it with your fingers it may appear quite stiff.

i have had 4 twin cams done loads of miles on each and never had one seize:nenau
 
Mine has a strong spring to hold it open as standard, still working grand. I don't know when it might be closed, it cycles when you switch on. Can we have a photo of one that seized shut?
 
I've had one replaced and it desiezed twice. Have now decided to stop messing around and removed it. Whilst the bike isn't used everyday, it is used year round and is just coming up to 48000. Don't think that's too bad for a three year old.
 
I've swapped the front pipes for a decat stainless steel without a flappy valve. Purely academic question really as mine will now gently rot away in the garage:D:D
 
I wish I had kept the photos of mine when I was looking at it long ago. In closed position, the gas path would be about 10x10mm, I am sure you would notice this pretty soon.
When I got my bike new 5yrs back, it sounded like a single cylinder - the dealer got the special tool and set the camshaft timing and all was well.
Meantime, I had checked a few things including the flappy valve thingy.
 
Evidence they don't seize with plenty of use. But use the bike at weekends (as most do) and the things just clag up.

Mine is used as daily transport - has had three new flappy valves + one servo/actuator under warranty as they seized. Now out of warranty so I've removed the flappy valve (it is stiff, but not yet seized completely) and replaced it with a short piece of plain stainless tube. Much more reliable :-)
 
Had what I thought was a seizure, bought another, started to strip the old one, and discovered removing the plug and replacing it cleaned the connections and hey presto, spot on again, so sitting with a spare now.

Don't think you'll find one - they usually seize in the open position.
 
When I took mine off at 3 years and 14,000 miles (I don't get out much) to fit decat headers it was free, now it's like Bendy's and guaranteed not to seize.
