Flashing turn Indicators

I'm a bit embarassed to be asking this as it's probably me being a dimwit... :blush

Does the 1200 GS have some kind of self-cancelling indicators?

On several occassions now I've engaged the indicators (seen the green arrow illuminate) only moments later to see that they are no longer flashing. This happens left and right.

I can't find any reference in the owners manual other than pointing out the switches themselves.

I have noticed this as well - have assumed there is some automatic turn off built in...

Just seen a V. similar question in another section, oops, sorry.

Search for indicators..... let's see what I can find...

 Flippin 'eck...and I haven't even got a 12

Yes, the 1200, like many new model BWM's, has self-cancelling indiflashicators.

They cancel after a certain distance, not a certain time, by the way.

Something like 200 metres.

Isn't there some complicated algorythm that takes into account speed and brakes and stuff?

EDIT..there is something, 'cos they stay on if you're sitting at lights so it's not time controlled......maybe it's speed/distance related???

Hi There,

if you indicate at motorway speeds I note that there's 15 flashes before they turn off. What this means in practice is that if you select the indicator on the second of the usual three warning boards to the exit of a motorway that the unit will stop flashing just when you leave the carriageway. I must have been bored that day to notice it!!!!!!

I've found regardless of speed that mine seem to cancel after I've covered 200 and 250meters. This includes observing the duration/distance when a stop at lights is required.

When riding in a group I've noticed that in order to give a good amount of direction indication, on leaving a motorway for example, I'm in the habit of a "thumb dance" which includes indicating, monitoring distance covered, cancelling and re-indicating if needed!

..... and as I consider it more, I'm concerned I've become obsessive-compulsive about it!!

I like the indicators most of the time i cancel them first but if i forget @ least i won't drive for miles with them on (not for the first time):o

I'm not overly impressed I have to say.

There is no mention of this in the rider's manual.

Nothing was told to me by the dealer on delivery when going through the controls.

I have mostly noticed this when manoevering into a right-turn lane which in my opinion is dangerous not to have indicators when performing the lane change as they've cancelled themselves.

If it's software driven surely it can be overriden by the dealer workshop in the same manner as they can adjust fuel mappings. I would request they switch it off myself.

I wrote to BMW UK about this, I suggested some sort of power-up sequence that would turn the self cancel off (just like you can turn the headlight off) and/or that pressing the indicator switch a second time would reset the self cancel distance. They forwarded it to the Krouts and not surprisingly I've heard nothing since.

when performing the lane change as they've cancelled themselves

They stay on for 250 yards (I wish it was 300 for motorway exits) but surely thats enough for a lane change. In fact too much, drivers will think you've just left them on.

In fact too much, drivers will think you've just left them on.

I work on the basis that most car drivers don't see bikes and even if I do indicate for 200yds some car drivers will only see 100yds of that if I'm lucky.

What about indicating one's intention to change lane? Waiting for vehicles to the right to pass, waiting for the gap, indicators turn off !! Does the next vehicle then think you're no longer gonna change lane?

My 04 bikes indicators don't self cancel and never have done. I asked the dealer at Mill to have a look at them while he was replacing the final drive unit and sorting a few other niggles. 'Didn't know they self cancel, are you sure?' Anyway when I collected the bike sure enough he was right, they still dont self cancel!
