Hi all, I have a problem with my float type fuel gauge on my 2010 r1200gs. It had been working erratically for the last few tank fulls and now is permanently registering empty. I’ve taken the petrol tank cap off and moved the float on its arm but the gauge still refuses to work. Any suggestions on what to do next? I hooked up my motoscan to the bike but no error codes are showing.

He has a float system already fitted ;)

I think GS911 will tell you what the bike had from new... this era can use either or device

is this a new bike to you or a failure of something that was working correctly for years and no one has played with the bike ?

and do you have ESA and a ZFE high - coz many think only the ZFE high can be coded to operate successfully with a fuel float....

Does the resistance change as the arm goes up and down? Guessing yours is a twin cam and its the standard set up?

I tried a secondhand float when I did my conversion, I did notice the sprung contacts weren't rubbing along the contact strip so no readings. Had to take it apart and bend the spring a little so the contacts were always touching, maybe worth a look.

It’s definitely a float as I took off fuel cap and looked at it today…you can move the float arm and the display doesn’t alter…just filled the tank up and it’s now showing 3/4 full but average mpg seems about right (54.3). Has always been super accurate up to now and I’ve had the bike for 7years.

ave mpg comes from injector cycles and duration - it will work with a dead gauge regardless

I had similar symptoms on my 2011 model recently. After removing the fuel tank covers followed by the fuel filler cap and the red plastic filler neck, it turned out the sender assembly and float had slipped off its mounting on the neck and was sitting at the bottom of the tank. However, if the float is visibly in its correct place this might be a different issue :nenau.
