Foglight/Driving light, whats what?

I just had to change a bulb in one of my driving light? Its starting to look a bit tired so thought it worth replacing it.

Been looking on ebay and there seems to be no difference in the lights, with most being advertised as being both fog and driving lights.

So is it just to do with where its mounted? Or how its wired?

As I figure it so far, driving lights are on with main beam, off with dip. What I currently have, mounted just above cylinder height.
Fog lights are on with dip, ???? with main.
So with both sets what happens? All on?

I would like to also add some lights to supplement the dip beam too try and make me more visible to other road users. Can I just rewire whats there?

Any recommendations on cheep lights too please.

a driving lamp is a spot lamp
a fog lamp is
driving/spot has a pencil beam to give good distance visibility
a fog lamp is generally mounted lower and has a flat wide beam to iluminate the road surface,and not dazzle.
cheap shiite lamps are generally just cheap and shiite.
decent lights are not cheap

Foglamps should have a low, wide, flat-topped beam. Legally, they should be fitted in pairs and only used in fog, falling snow or conditions of seriously reduced visibility.

I recommend not buying cheap foglamps. All the cheap ones I've ever tried have been next to useless. Get some Hella Micro DE or if you want something larger, either Hella FF100 or FF300. Be aware that some of those are advertised on eBay for outrageous prices!

I think I paid about £70 for mine.

I found the Hella's very good for reinforcing the dipped beam, if you want better lighting on main beam then you could always go for some CIBIE Oscars!

Cheap lights have poor lenses so just scatter the light everywhere including up into the sky.

"driving lights" seem to have become a euphemism for lights which are just on and serve no particular purpose other than decorative or to "draw attention" i.e. daylight running lights?

If you do just want some cheap non functional lights you can get LED lamps to replace halogen alternatives, saves wasting power to just light the sky.
