I have had my GS800 for seventeen weeks and 6200 miles without any trouble, recalls or issues.
I bought a GS800 because my wifes GS650 was so impressive through the Alps and left my Kawasaki struggling up the passes. Her bike put to rest any worries I had about the small tank, and did not break its chains, clutch or blow up.
At the time I had serious doubts about the reliability of the 800cc twins. Almost every post was about a failure, reliability issue or a recall. I talked to a few owners of early models who probably finished off BMWs road testing and development who loved the bike when it was running OK but were fed up with the reliability.
Four months on and the posts on the forum have mainly changed from horror stories to more general questions and advice. I hope this is a good sign and can only help encourage more riders to choose this superb bike.

do a search for 'Micky', he got one of the first in the country(UK) and has done serious mileage on it, ending up in Pakistan....i dont think he had any issues apart from the radiator hose coming loose...:thumb2

This is my first post to this website.

I've owned an 800GS since June 2008 and it's been brilliant. A rad hose that was too short and a leaky engine seal both fixed under warranty at Motorrad Battersea quickly with no questions asked have been the sum of my issues.

Mine hasn't missed a beat on two trips from London up to and around the north and west coasts of Scotland and a return trip to the French Alps plus doing battles and games in a daily London commute. Done a small amount of summer green-laning with it too.

I reckon it's powerful enough for what it is, handles well, looks great, sounds great, is really fuel efficient, and you can bling it up to your heart's content. I think it's a great bike for anyone who wants to muck about doing a bit of everything and I'm looking forward to a really big adventure on it in time.

Disappointed to hear that owners have been really pissed off by simple mechanical issues that could perhaps have been avoided through better design or use of slightly higher quality components. But hope the enjoyment has outweighed the niggles.
