Had to remove my sump over the weekend on my 100 GS PD, which has the extended sump fitted. Was removing/replacing the centre stand, which you can't do without removing extended sump !

So, on removal of the sump, I noticed a small object in the bottom - looks very much like a "needle" from a needle bearing, about 10mm long, and approx 2 or 3 mm diameter ( will get exact size later, as bike is round at my pal's garage). But I cannot find or think of anywhere this can have come from.

Initial thoughts were from the oil pressure relief valve, but that part is, according to MotorWorks website, 30mm long, and probably wider.
Second thought was from the rocker arms, but this part looks to be way too big for that,
Third thought was from the oil pressure light switch, but don't think it has such a part inside -never seen one in bits !

So, anyone got any (sensible !) suggestions please ? Hope to put the sump back on next weekend, ready for the Belgium Airhead Rally.

Final thought is that it has somehow been dropped into sump accidentally by previous owner :blast- I might have a photo of the part available later for better identification.

I found a big end shell in my mates engine. Somebody must have swapped them out in the past, dropped it in and then couldn't be arsed to drop the sump and retrieve it.

Here are 2 pics of the bit in question .....you can just about see that the ends are rounded or machined, so clearly they have not snapped off anything.

So , I expect the replies to come flooding in now ......

perhaps it's a tracking device?

Looks like a locating dowel to me .

I was wondering about that - so what in the lower engine or sump uses a locating pin /dowel ? Anything ....? I do have the extended sump, and the lower oil pick-up , so I'll have a close look when I re-assemble, but seems unlikely.

i have found a needle roller in a rocker cover before, from the rocker gear . years ago so cant remember the size. could one have traveled ??

I'd be wanting to make that Someone Elses Sump ASAP. :augie

???????

Nothing wrong with the sump, so don't quite
follow- however I'll be keeping it, and rebuilding
bike at the weekend.
Was just hoping someone might help solve
the mystery, and also just be confident that a crucial
part of the engine hasn't fallen off!

Without wishing to cause alarm  AAAAAGGGHH.

Are any of the crank bearing roller type ?.

I think a bearing roller would have plain ends - machined flat.

That looks like a detent plunger with its rounded ends and my initial thought was oil pressure relief valve - but you say its too small for that.

Its too large for a needle roller bearing.

Put the bike together, run it up and check the oil pressure. If its all OK just use it.

Someone has dropped it in at sometime and it may have nothing to do with the engine.

I stripped my tractor gearbox and found a spanner in there - you just can't tell what people get up to :D.

:thumbThanks Voyager - oil pressure was fine before sump came off- been over to Croatia in 40
degrees, and no oil light showing, so hopefully all is well.
Not found a spanner as yet, but I'll double check!!!
Cheers:D

I stripped an Imp engine once and found three camshaft sprockets in the sump. Feck knows how long they had been in there, but they never did any harm.

I bet there are loads of people riding around with bits in their sumps that they have no idea about.
