GOING BACK TO FRANCE,STAYING NEAR LAC DE CHALAN, CAN ANYONE RECOMEND ANY GOOD ROUTES AROUND THAT AREA THAT CAN BE DONE IN ONE DAY.ALSO WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO DO THE STELVIO AS AN OVERNIGHT TRIP, AND IF SO ANY GOOD ROUTES THERE AND BACK.WE HAVE ONLY GOT FIVE DAYS TOURING TIME AND DONT WANT TO WASTE ANY OF IT.
THANKS STEEEVO

You may find it difficult to do the Stelvio from Lac de Chalain as an overnight trip. It may not look far on the map, but you'll do well to average 30mph in the high mountains.

I'm sure there are some great routes in the western Alpes, but I'm not familiar with that area. Wherever you go, have fun:beerjug:

Have you bought a map? If not, look at the sticky section where suggestions on which maps to buy can be found.

Do you own a Garmin GPS and have access to Mapsource? If so, have a look at the 80 Virees a moto stickies. Anything there there which (when linked to a map) spark the imagination?

Come back to us when you have the answers and have found the caps lock on your keyboard.

PS For anyone who wants to add help to STEEVO, this is where Lac de Chalan is:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Lac...Id5k1YAA&hnear=Lac+de+Chalain&t=m&z=7&vpsrc=6

and here's the Stelvio:

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Ste...ass,+Bormio+Sondrio,+Lombardy,+Italy&t=m&z=15

It is 330 miles away by the most direct route, crudely avoiding motorways and tolls, handicapped only by the bloody Alps getting in the way.

Yes you can do it as an overnight trip, providing you ride the 330 mile jaunt out in a day, which is reasonably easy to do.

Thanks Wapping
found caps key, just thought some of us might be visually challanged, dont have a garmin, but have a load of maps, better to ask you guys with experience.
thanks steeevo

OK lets see what we can do to help some more.

If you can open Adobe files, go to: http://www.motomag.com/-Telechargements-.html

Yup, it's in French but pictures are pictures.

Click on the picture of the magazines.

There may be no specific routes for exactly what you want but it may give you some ideas from the route cards. Click away, it's web-based so you can't break it.

What next?

Arm yourself with this book:

Available from Amazon. Again, it's it French but routes are routes.

You can download the routes in PDF for each area here:

http://www.viamichelin.fr/tpl/mag6/...es-a-moto-2010-fichiers-GPS-a-telecharger.htm

Here's a sample:

Have fun :thumb2

You're in motorcycle paradise.:D

I live in that neck of the woods, I've posted some nice routes on here, you should be able to find them. If not, pm me your email address and I'll send them to you.

Happy new year Stolzy all the best from Scotland, cant seem to find your links if possible could you e-mail any routes you think we should do while in Jura region, thanks steeevo. our email is [email protected]

As Wapping says, it is doable in a day  but my preference (call me lazy) from where you are staying would be to head to Andermatt for an overnighter

Head to Broc, then over the Jaun Pass, stick to the North side of Lake Thun and Brienze (to avoid motorway and buying a vignette) and then off to the likes of Grimsel, Susten, Furka and Nufenen Passes etc.

IMO Stelvio is good but after 400 miles getting there, I really don't think that I could muster the enthusiasm to enjoy all those bloody switchbacks. Personally, I enjoy 200 - 250 miles of high mountain passes fully loaded with pillion per day but after that I begin to get tired.

I wish you all the forum members a very happy and prosperous new year 2012.... :)
