France, for the first time.

I've just returned from a 16 day/2500 miles trip through France, I didn't see any static speed cameras, but I did see 2 Gendarme speed traps, one of which was placed on the back of of flat back recovery truck, luckilly the locals were flashing all approaching traffic. Both the speed traps were on the major N routes. We planned our trip to mostly avoid autoroutes and the N roads, preferring to keep to as many D roads as possible, we saw 3 pairs of police/gendarme motorcyclists, and the occasional car or van in a village or small town. I certainly got the impression that France is very underpoliced, or is the UK overpoliced? Anyway some serious speeds were attained on our routes, it was an absolute pleasure to be on those traffic free roads. We did the Routes des Grandes Alpes from Menton to Lac Leman, superb, saw lots of old classic cars on the route, and mucho respect goes to the cyclists pounding away on those hills.

My mate set his Garmin Quest to avoid toll roads & motorways. Bloody thing took us down these windy country lanes until he reset it.

I'm still trying to work out why riding down winding country lanes is bad ...

Just come back from France on the bike too! Camping, had a great time. (came back on Eurotunnel Monday, loadsa GS's on the train)
Roads are smooooooth. The police are about and give you on the spot fines, but if you keep within the limits which are OK, can be up to 130 KPH you won't even spot one!

Le Mans car 24, June, they were shelling out tickets all over the place.

Oh, word of warning, if you get to your destination late and the campsites/hotels are 'complete', and decide to kip on the grass in a park, make sure it doesn't have timed sprinklers that come on at 2am!
