Hi All, new to the forums.
After having lurked here for a few months now, decided to put together a route for my first trip abroad. I took inspiration from your many posts and would like some feedback/suggestions on the below.

Split over 6 days, clockwise, no motorway
Red bit: Days 1 & 6 which will include the trip to/from The Midlands

2 things that immediately spring to mind:
1. You're so close to the Black Forest it'd be rude not to visit :D
2. Mulhouse is home to Musée National de l'Automobile, collection Schlumpf which is well worth a visit

Looks good. I see you have focussed on the ''Vosges'' area of eastern France.
Nice riding!

If you join the forum as a full member then people can also DM you and share more info.........

as example...

The blue bit towards Saarbrucken: I'd stay further north for the second half, through Luxembourg. The bit just north of Metz isn't particularly scenic.

Just after you enter Belgium on that same day, there is apparently a bit of road towards Bouillon that is rumoured to be closed to bikes. Worth checking.

Vosges area is fantastic biking. One of my favourite biking destinations. Can be a touch moist though!

If you could loop through Germany and the Black Forest instead of the black route through France, it would make it even better, but time might not allow.

I think it's not a bad route at all. You'll definitely enjoy the bits in green and blue. Make sure you go up the grand ballon west of colmar. The Alsace villages running north south along the base of the hills (wine region) are well worth visiting for food drink and somewhere to sleep. There are some good/poignant WW2 sites in the area too if that interests you. If you get as far as Mulhouse you should also visit the city du train as well as the schlumpf car museum, its outstanding.

You’re going past this place too, if you want to see real trenches this is the place, it’s incredible when you see how close the German and French trenches were and the huge difference in their construction

Thank you all for the suggestions.

I will play with the route via Black Forest, but not sure time will allow it. Will re-route dark blue through Luxembourg and will definitely visit some of the sites suggested, especially Schlumpf

P.S thank you for embedding the pic Richard

The trip looks good. Of course there are several variations you can consider or do. For example, the suggestion of moving the blue line up into the bottom of Belgium / middle / bottom of Luxembourg and / or extending the green line into the Black Forest. But either or both are, as you observed, dictated by the time available and your appetite for riding X distance(s) in a day, maybe for several days on the trot. Whilst it’s sometimes good to push yourself a bit (people can generally go further than they think, once they get into the swing) but, less is sometimes more for a first trip. That you’ll learn a lot, is for sure…. And it’ll stand you in good stead for the future.

Only you know you, so go with your instinct.

If you can find the time during or after the jaunt to write a trip report, great. I’m sure it would be appreciated by those who, like you, are making their first trip across the Channel and of interest to others. too.

Enjoy your holiday.
