May Trip

Went over the bridge last year on my way to the Spanish GP and as for good roads all I can say is look at the map and you have a wide choice. I stayed at Brive the night before going over the bridge and we took some great roads from there. If you don't get a lot of response from your message, I will be amazed but if you are unlucky I will get the maps out and try and give you my route.

What I can tell you though is if you go over the bridge and continue down the motorway is actually like a race track. It winds down the mountain and has sweeping bends. With limited ability I enjoyed myself but some frenckh lads came past me and were getting their knees down. It was a joy to behold.

Enjoy your trip. Some of my mates were going to do it this year but they wanted to do it in 4 days and I have told them that you need at least 6 so they are rethinking the idea.

Been down here a few times now - I usually stay around the Fegiac area and head down to Rodez and from there onto the bridge. The bridge is great but make sure you take the oportunity to travel up the gorge from the bridge and then head out of the gorge. Look out for the D998 which is one of the best roads I have ever run on - starts off out of the gorge with the usual twisty sheer drops then goes through forests with new tarmac (April 2008) the huge big sweepers following up the Lott valley.

Another great run is the D999 which you will find after the bridge heading south which will take you down to Nimes

First off welcome to the forum.

You should be able to find loads of great roads and routes here. Just brew up sit back and get reading.

Cheers Tom

There are three gorges that finish/start at Millau, the most famous being the Gorge du Tarn, don't miss it! Practically all the roads in that area are really good, you just can't go wrong!

The extreme West of France is not particularly interesting from a riding point of view. There are fast roads and motorways, but not very exciting. Once you get south of the Loire, by heading south inland a couple of hundred miles, it all gets much hillier, much better roads, but still fast roads if you're on a tight schedule. Sort of Limoges-Brive-Cahors-Montauban.

(I'm firmly in the camp that says the Millau bridge is much better heading from south to North - you hardly get a glimpse of it in advance, then - WOW! -you're on it. If you can time it to do it at dusk, so much the better.)

I have probably been over the bridge more times than anyone on here and I still can't decide which is best. North to south when the sun is picking it out is quite spectacular. Crossing on a clear night south to north is probably my favourite, I have only done it once and it was in the car. All the lights of Millau are spread below and one really gets a sense of the height.

Some routes can be seen here http://www.motomassif.info many to and from the Millau...
As Shenzi says the whole area os a paradise for bikes... I personnally think the Millau is best viewed from the Town rather than actually on her though there is a Aires with a view point ;)...

As per Robin I'd stay away from the West coast , go down the middle and find much, much better roads.

Should be down there myself from 14th May. Keep an eye open for a 1150GSA and about 12 ....ed off looking coppers. We intend riding down in 1 day and as most of them are on sports bikes they are getting a bit err ... "twitchy". There's even talk of swapping bikes every 100 miles or so to relieve the pain and avoid cramp, but my arse will be staying on my bike. :thumb

Can't help you with roads but... I am on a 'Wild ones' tour of France from the 15th to 29th May so if you see a fat 'tosser' on a blue '08 reg R1200GS do give us the official GSUKER wave.
