Front brake disc bolts - what grade of SS?

Only two grades readily available - A2 and A4.
The main difference is the resistance to corrosion. A4 would be used on sea boat fittings.

But neither are as strong as standard bolts.

Anyone know what grade of stainless steel is "required" for front brake disc bolts?

Well its better than another what oil thread! :augie

The general opinion, (mine as well), it that you need to be very careful in the use of stainless bolts on your Airhead and certainly not for critical areas including front brake fittings

I would always use what BMW use - clean them regularly if you are concerned with rust

Your standard bolts should be marked "88"
A4 stainless is the nearest

The bolts are used in sheer, so the actual tensile strength of the bolt is less of a question. So long as they will take the torque tightening setting, they should be OK.
I have A2 stainless in mine at the moment:augie

so are you recommending, (or approving), that he replaces the original bolts and fits stainless bolts to his front discs?

Personal choice Bill.
I have A2's but want some A4's but can not find any at 110mm long at the moment.

You pays your money and takes your own chances, but as I said 88's are close to A4 and "should do";)

Wonderful week here is SW France....hope it continues...great days, fabulous mornings and wonderful evenings....pure joy

I expect you are sitting on your terrace, (with a glass), after a fine meal....just as we are........I nip inside once in a while when "the other half" receives the usual evening phone calls from the "kids"...... to this bloody machine and Forum.........but that's just my addiction...Eva Cassidy playing in the background

As you probably have gathered I favour OEM stuff, always will, as I am not an expert in any field.............just been riding BMs since 1982, (the year I could afford one)

Onto the cheese and red stuff!

Edit - PS - wait - now we have got bloody Rod Stewart, ("we recorded this 24 years ago, most of the Band weren't born and mi wife was only 1, (years old)"), - at least I drove, (and sat in the back seat), of one of his 560 SELs - Black with tiger skin seat covers

you must eat cheese at room temperature to really appreciate it

Bleedin heck you go out to a concert, come back and find loads of info, excellent! :D

OK as far as OE goes I'm running a twin disk set up so the standard 70mm bolt is too short, hence m question on stainless.

Given that various suppliers of aftermarket bits and bobs offer stainless disk bolts I wanted to get an opinion on what grade to use hence the question.

Taken into account all I've read so far A4 seems to be the way I'll go:thumb

Thanks all :rob

There really is no gain using A4 on a bike.
A4 is more brittle than A2. I've always used A2. And all the kits i supply for the 1150 are A2.
