Good evening, hope someone can help. My brother has a 2005 R1200GS with abs. All was well until he fitted an extended brake hose so that he could fit some bar risers. He bled the brake, the abs motor runs fine and pumps fluid. He can pull the brake sharply and it’s perfect, but if he pulls it slowly, it will comes steadily back to the handlebars. Any ideas. Thanks.

Has he bled the servo/abs modulator under the tank ?
It has several bleed nipples and needs to be bled if brake system has been broken into, as it would be in fitting a new brake line.

There is also a bleed nipple in the wheel arch- well, there was one on my 1200gs 2004

When it had a 'rest' on a trail, brake fluid came out of the servo breathers...
Some ' Gelander' eh?
So it was residual braking from Igoumenitsa to Athens...:eh

Needed vacuum pull through

Thanks, I’ll pass it on. He lives in France, so I can’t assist him 👍

He says he’s bled the system as seen in a YouTube guide 10 times. Loads of fluid coming out with no bubbles, but still the same symptoms. Pull quick and firmly and it stays good, pull nice and slow and it comes back to the bars. He connected the front master directly to the front brakes, missing out the abs and it’s perfect. I’m sure he must be missing something.

that's a normal failure mode of a damaged master cyl seal

sudden high pressure forces it to seal in the bore and the huge pressure keeps the seal doing its thing regardless of the state of the bore or the seal
when you go gently, all the fluid slips past the wear and tear and it comes back to the bars...

He says that he has by passed the ABS unit and all is good which sounds like the fault is a leaking valve in the abs unit and master cylinder is good.
Could be that the sudden hard pressure is holding the valve shut but slow gradual pressure is allowing the fluid past the valve.

I suppose it could be a coincidence that the abs has failed at the same time as changing a pipe. Sounds like it needs removing.
