Front Brake Lever Removal R1100GS

Maybe I'm being a numpty.....

Got master cylinder rebuild kit for my '98 1100GS. Assume you remove the brake lever first. Undone all the relevant bolts and removed the pivot pin - which was easy enough.

Still can't get the lever out - is it obvious?

It is about £40 from Motorworks. It consists of the piston with seals already in place and the rubber boot. I recommend buying the level pivot pin also (about £8)

I've got to renovate my master cylinder due to a slight leak but some of the paint has wrinkled and is coming off too. Any suggestions on paint to use on the alloy?
