I have just replaced the front brake pipe (lower between the hoses over the mudguard) on a 1150. Found the speedo cable to have been rubbing on the pipe and worn through underside, so 1150 owners just check.

Story goes, coming back from France massive down pour and a bit knackered braked hard from 80 for a roundabout and the brakes felt weak, same for next one, so did a few hard stops thinking it was just pads water logged and shited up. Home and bike washed and polished and put to bed till today when I serviced it and noticed fluid on my wheel. A quick look found the problem could have been nasty.

Just had the similar thing happen, although mine burst when brake applied hard. Fortunately this happened in my garage and not in the Alps the previous week!! My fault I guess, should have checked them more often, they have been on there for nine years after all.

On a year 2000 1150 that I recently owned the metal crossover pipe numbered 10 in the diagram was replaced as a recall.

Yep, This was a FREE Recall!!

I have a 2001 non-ABS 1150 & had it recalled to change this pipe - it was replaced with one with bend to keep it well clear of speedo cable - even though mine showed no sign of rubbing.

I looked...'99 GS1150 and I still have the pipe. Looks OK and doesn't rub but perhaps time to drop by the dealer and ask about the replacement part...

Thanks for the info.

Just checking...I showed it to the BMW dealer who found the old recall sheet and is ordering the parts to replace the pipe.

As an official BMW RECALL are both parts and labour usually free?
