Enjoying track day at Cadwell today...until warped disc so bad can barely touch front brake! What's the best ones to replace them with and cheapest source if anyone's fitted new ones recently? Thanks ....

Steptoes disc's are the ones I would get they are tough and great when you get them warm:thumby:

If you have been using a disc lock, this might be the cause of the damage that's led to the warping.

No don't use disc lock but I have done 55000 miles now and a slow almost hypnotic rolling when I occasionally use the front on the road became a teeth juddering clatter when used hard on the track...yday certainly taught me just what you can do with the back brake alone...!!

Only use the back brake on the road!!!! you can't be serious can you?, most of your braking power is through the front brake I think you need to learn how to ride as well as getting new brake discs!!.

Maybe he is a good rider and doesn't use brakes very much as he reads the road and is in the right gear and only needs a little braking occasionally don't throw stones until you have the full facts.

Maybe YOU should learn to ride as you appear to rely on brakes.

See works both ways ;)

Thanks Yellow Peril..I'd like to think my riding is pretty good, I do about 20000 miles a year, Russia and the Artic circle last year, I'm a ROSPA Gold rider and have done 4 track days in last 3 weeks....and YES a good rider barely touches the brakes, 'comfort braking' unsettles the bike, read the road properly, use the gears and the brakes are largely for emergencies, although the back is great for tightening corners up to embarrass your mates on sports bikes...

On the original point I have phoned the GS shop about 10 times today and can't get a reply...I'll try again tomorrow!

One other thing davegs, using the back brake tightens the corner so you get round quicker and safer, using the front stands the bike up and you end up hitting what your trying to miss....

!

at the risk of a heated debate - when I did the police safe rider, the chap was asked the very question about braking, he said neither using them into corners or not is right or wrong, its what suits your style, he said they were taught to brake into corners and then go round on a constant throttle with maybe a dash of rear, this, he said is the method that makes best progress, I got the impression that he didn't equate lack of brake use with being an excellent rider automatically

his final words were - brake pads are cheaper to change than chains and transmissions!

of course its all his opinion!

On the police bikesafe I attended, one guy said that in 20+ yrs of riding he had never used his front brake, but this wasn't down to good planning ahead, it was purely due to fear. He was frightened of skidding/locking the front wheel. He'd also never performed any planned overtakes, choosing to tootle behind whichever car was in front of him at the time. There were gasps around the room

BMW use Brembo discs. But everyone knows how rubbish they are.
I brake up to a corner when I've over cooked it or the corner is not as expected but I hardly ever use the back brake pedal. TBH if I could disconnect the back front link I would.
Other bikes I've owned have had the steering affected by braking but the GS seems almost totally neutral. It can also brake to the apex then get straight onto the power. Try that on a sports bike. Other bikes would lift out of a bend with power alone. The BMW has to be counter-steered in and out which took a while to adapt to.
