Put my bike in to the local bike mechanic for him to change chain, front and rear sprockets. Turned out supplier sent me the wrong rear sprocket as there are two types, one with 10mm holes and one with 8mm holes. No problem I will just swap them over.
But.................the mechanic is saying that he could not get the front sprocket on as it was too tight ? and would damage the gearbox by giving it a good whack. I've tried to find out if there are two sizes (and there isn't). So what do I do now, I don't want anything damaged putting the sprocket on, so is this a common thing with bmw ? and what's the solution to get it on ?
Thanks in advance.

I've heard about them beeing tight. When I did mine a few whacks with a hammer sofend with some wood did the trick. Make sure it's just tight not wrong. JJH

Cheers JJH...........I can't find anywhere that says there is more than one type, so has to be the right one. Scared to tell the mechanic to just whack it, he is supposed to know more than me lol.

I've had the same with a front sprocket from TT ... it went over the right shoulder and I found another one. I'm not tapping it on with a hammer as it need to go on freely...

Changed my front sprocket for a one tooth bigger F650GS one bought a genuine one and cant remember it been tight on the shaft something does not sound right is there a build up of rust and gunk on the splines ?

You would expect the standard sprockets to fit but i have heard many times of aftermarket sprockets being incorrect on the fit or even the offset where it puts the chain run out of line from the rear sprocket. I either buy OE or Renthal if i have the choice.

I am thinking of fitting the F650 gs sprocket to my 2009 F800gs as i never ride off road apart from gravel tracks and the engine is a bit frantic at motorway speeds.

There are 2 types of rear sprocket. 1 type of front as far as I know.

Front sprockets are notorious for being stuck on. My first one as a pig to get off. Lots of penetrating lube and 'shocking' it off did the trick. (Shocked with a hammer ;-) )
Used a ton of copper slip once the new one was on. Subsequent ones after that easy a cake!

Just taken my front sprocket off even though my 17t hasn,t arrived yet. The bolt came out very easily with my 1/2" thumper gen and the sprocket slid off the splines easily but i suspect i am on the second set of sprockets as there was copperslip on the output shaft splines.
