For some reason I was looking around my bike tonight and noticed cracks on my front tyre, especially on the right hand side.
each block has a split in the rubber, some going down into the sidewall.

Is this normal or something to cause alarm?

How old is the tyre? That looks like cracks caused by aging. If it was me, I'd buy new tyres immediately.

And if you're taking a couple of years to get through a set of tyres, I suggest choosing a stickier, faster wearing tyre (Anakees instead of Tourances).

Front is less than a year old - and that's only cause i was away in the US for 7 months last year. Bike sat in the barn unused.
I'm supposed to ride down to Margate on Wed and then over to the Hograost.
Nowhere in Edinburgh is going to do me a front Tourance tomorrow........

Is this normal or something to cause alarm?

Eeer........... yes! Either get yourself a new front ASAP, or get a lift to the Hograost!

:beerjug:

Thirded....looks like the blocks are seperating from the carcass.

No way I'd be riding that

front tyre cracks

I had the same problem with my front tyre same make, i changed mine to be on the safe side better safe than sorry, lifes not a rehearsal.

The most stress on a tyre is towards the sidewall of the tyre.....and guess where the cracks are. I'd be getting a new one on ASAP - wouldn't fancy a front blowout on a bike ever.

snodog,
Get in touch with Strathearn tyres in Crieff 01764 655904, they normally have Tourances in stock and at a good price, tell em Pete (blue and white gs) sent you.

Wasn't there an issue some time back whereby Metzeler were replacing tires with this fault, FOC?????

I had the same with my front Tourance last summer at 4k miles.

Local dealer said they thought the tyre was ok () but I had it changed anyway. They offered to send it back for a report but then forgot and the evidence got binned............:anger

Annoying isn't it

Pete A - thanks for the Crieff heads up, but I managed to make Moto-Cal for sorry enough for me that they did the work today.
Asked about the tyre - they reckon Metezler would say 1 of 3 things.

1. I'd been cleaning the tyre with solvents :nono (as if, I got a bollocking off Motorrad for not cleaning the bike at all......)

2. I've been running with low tyre pressure.... now admittedly I haven't checked my pressures, but they "look" ok and the front end has never been "squirrely" under any circumstance.

3. I've been abusing my front tyre :gosh :yikes by riding my motorcycle too hard !

WTF !

I'm going to email Metezler and ask what they have to say.

You get the same crescent shaped cracks also in Bridestone 020 tyres on the R/H side only after approx half wear.
I have changed loads of these as the riders prefer safer than sorry rideing..
Bridgestone say "Its only cosmetic??". Your choice ??.
