I have cut this post from a parallel XT thread, simply as it relates to the Nav V predominantly.

===============

I currently have a Nav V that came free with the bike, prior to that I had a previous Garmin incarnation of some sort and a Tom Tom for the car.
When I got the 1st Garmin I tried to get to grips with it and Basecamp and almost threw the laptop out of the window in frustration before just giving up.
When I got the Nav V I tried again with the same result.
I went away with a friend who has mastered Basecamp and he shared his routes with me, he also had a Nav V and we made sure our settings matched but on no day did any directions on either Gsrmin match.
I've given up with the bloody thing and just look at a map the day before I go anywhere and add a load of towns/villages along a rough route that looks likely. As you would expect this has proved hit and miss at best as you're sometimes directed to town centres you have no interest in but if you skip that the next part of the route gets beggared up.
I'm about to retire and hope to travel more, insha'Allah, so will give it a 3rd attempt now I should have more time on my hands, particularly at the moment. Truth be told I don't hold out much hope for success either in mastering the dark art or for retaining my patience.

The Tom Tom was, however, a delight to use.

The Navigator V is a very reliable device.

If you can’t master BaseCamp (or simply want to believe the “It’s crap” comments) then I’d suggest trying MyRoute, which has the added luxury of being useable on an iPad / iPhone or similar device.

When it comes to ‘giving it a go’ and you get stuck, come back for help.

I bought a used Nav V last year and had no problem with it I really like it, its easy to use and robust.

Re Basecamp you just need to persist and don't try to do too much at once. I have recently started to plot my routes using Google may maps and then import them into Basecamp as a KML file which arrives as a track which can be converted as a route. A huge amount of help is available on here!

Thanks Comrades. I am very much in the 'Basecamp is crap' camp but plenty of others use it without issue so I suspect the issue is me rather than it.
Unfortunately I am an incompetent idiot when it comes to computers which is very much evidenced by Pootler's kind response which might as well have been written in Spanish for all the sense it made to me. :nenau

I did download an Application that was supposed to make everything easy, Revit or some such thing and creating the track was easy but trying to move it (or anything) into Basecamp proved impossible despite lots of YouTube videos making it look a doddle. :headbat

As I say I'll sit down and give it a good 10 or 15 minutes before giving up once and for all. :surrender
