Rode the G/S from Croydon to Bristol and back yesterday - GPS showed a max of 93mph:augie

I've noticed this a a few times on the motorway, at around 90 miles from fuel up the bike begins to stutter from hitting reserve. I then fill up and all ok - but still 6-7 litres left in the tank:confused:. Yesterday I gave the bike a good old left to right shake (rather than switching to reserve) and she keeps going for another 20miles home and didn't hit reserve again.

Its the standard 19 tank with single tap. So I am thinking the fuel may be trapped the far side of the tank and because you're sat bolt up right its nots flowing from one side to the other.

Anyone else have this problem or am I barking up the wrong tree? I hate the stuttering from reserve.

Not sure the G/S is the best for my motorway riding though fuel consumption plummets at about 80mph and steering can be a little vague on TKC80s. I got over 40mpg on the back roads to Devon for the airhead weekend (speed more in low sixities then).

Cheers

I was up North a souple of weeks ago on my ST (small tank one tap )rideing at 60 -70 mph was hitting reserve approx 120 to 130 miles getting 150 miles to Mallaig from Glasgow on a tank with probable couple of litres left when I filled it up.

I,ve often wondered if the right hand side of the tank holds fuel which cant be used Ill need to start shaking it like yourself to see if this is the case .:thumb

It's to discourage you from spending too much time on the motorways. On A and B roads the petrol gets slopped about from one side of the tank to the other resulting in it not getting stuck on the side away from the tap.

Why would you want to ride a nice Airhead on a motorway anyway?

The right hand side on these single tap tanks makes a useful 'reserve reserve' if you've underestimated the distance you can hang on to the next fuel stop. Stop and lean the bike onto its left hand cylinder head and you can get another 10-15 miles or so. Probably a good idea to do that on a regular basis anyway to shift any condensation water etc.

That confirms my thinking then, if on Motorway need to give it a good rock side to side at about 80 miles. 36mpg on the way there (speed 70ish), 33mpg on the way back, speed 80ish. Need to keep it in the 60s to get over 40mpg.

Might have to get a 2nd bike for the motorways. :beerjug:

Well now,
Dellortos on my Guzzi - whether i'm gentle or 'brisk' i get about 45/50mpg
Bings :barf on my R100GS - in town (never get the throttle above about a 1/4 turn :nenau ) it's an alcoholic  out of town - about 50mpg!
though i love riding it - it's one of the main reasons i'm selling it - i simply cannot afford this any longer. :tears
