Hi All,

Anyone had problems with the petrol cap not opening, just went to fill up for first time and it won’t open, tried both methods and their is a click using the button on the remote key as instructed in the manual, but it won’t open, used the emergency method and it opened, clicked opened and closed after that but again after 2 minutes it’s locked again and won’t open.

I can fill up using that method which will get me to the first service when it can be sorted but just wanted to know if anyone else had the issue.

And yes I know I have to wait til everything is off 😁

I know it's a different bike but there's history of this happening to the 1250s too that was caused by over tightening of the torx bolts that hold the filler assembly in place so might be worth checking that out as a possible cause?

Yeah I had one stick on a 1200 but that was faulty pin, I tried the bolts, the fact it worked perfectly once I used the emergency procedure shows it’s not that 👍🏼

Removing the two forward screws will allow you to open the cap. Then you must lubricate the small pin that latches the cap. If fuel has been splashed on this pin it can wash away whatever lube was in there. This is a common issue and easily remedied

Thanks,

Yes I removed the screws ( once I read it in the manual 😁 ) it is a brand new bike so would have thought it was greased, the fact it opened easily once I removed the screws and put everything back it opened so easily and clicked everyone I lifted the little button, then after I left it 5 minutes no click and it won’t open under any circumstances makes me think it’s not that 👍🏼

Shut your gob you fn' wanker. Good profile picture, the face of an idiot

You've not been on here long have you. I fully understand. I'd be upset too if I'd just spent £20k ish on my P&J and the same problem from the last 8 years still haven't been fixed.

If you think the profile pic is bad, you should see the real thing

How do you know it’s the same problem, what is it then ? I had an issue a few years ago but it wasn’t the same as this, it feels more electrical, I will update everyone once sorted.

Might be a different cause but - Fuel cap stuck in 2017, right through to 2025.

Might be some kind of designers prize for that.

It’s the bolts may be a part turn too tight . Typically happens after fitting a tank ring. If the bolts are too tight if you push the cap down while pulling the lever it will normally open.

Thanks Barry, no tank ring and never touched, did try the loosening as you said and it made no difference 👍🏼

Is it a 1300gs you have?. Wasn't aware that the buttons on the remote ever did allow the petrol cap to be opened??. They'll lock the panniers & top box if you have the vario's & work the steering lock. Never needed to try it to see if they did the petrol cap though.

The bike does limit the amount of time you have to open the fuel cap after switching the ignition off. Can't remember how long it is, maybe 30 seconds or a minute??. After that you have to do a double pull on the petrol cap flap & with the key in range. First pull only goes so far & then you lower the flap part way and lift it up again and it should open. It is mentioned in the manual.

It’s a GSA, here’s what it says in the manual

Yes, that's the same as the GS, nothing to do with the buttons on the remote key fob though.
It's within 2 minutes after switching the ignition off that you can just pull the flap up. After 2 minutes it's the double pull I mentioned, with the key in range.
