Fuel Consumption - off the chart!!

On the way back from Spain last week, I on my 1200GS, a pillion and extended Vario Paniers and top box were doing 80 - 90 mph on Motorways and the fuel consumption dropped to ridiculously low levels.

Typically I'd get 140 - 160 a tank, and that's usually riding spiritedly, but this dropped to 125 on the motorway.

I guess thats around 4.16 Gallons / 125 miles = 30 mpg (I think )

Is this typical?

That must have taken some real effort ! Two up on mine at around 90 the bike returns about 40 mpg.

I don't off hand, the costs were madness in UK one motorway station was £1.27 per litre!!!!

I do know that it went from fuel light on to fuel light on, so similar quantities and I assume it was a full tank because of that.

So allowing for four litres of reserve that gives 16 litres used in 125 miles and just over 35 mpg, pretty grim....

Got to be the panniers I guess - no other sensible reason for it - neither I or the SWMBO are big-uns? And we were getting reasonable miles in the Picos - even considering the elevations and in many cases hard riding.

I wasn't even two up Dave

One up but with all my luggage together with my mates who was on a Blade. Keeping up with him and running constantly well into three figures might explain the fuel (and oil ) consumption

Even 90ish, two up, won't see me get 40 - I wonder if the Wunderlich fuel controller makes much difference

You should try harder.....Coming back from the Moroccan Dash, 1200GSA full panniers, screen up, flat out mile after mile, MPG dropped to the low to mid 20's.....

Came back from france 2 weeks ago, 2 up with varios 80-90mph, nearly all motorway as was running late!. we achieved 44mpg consistantly. However the missus is only 8 stone and i'm not huge.Another big factor to consider especially last week was you would have been riding against the unusual northerly winds all the way up which could easily have made your mpg plummet at those speeds .

I will bite! We did France one day, down to the foothills of Andalucia on the 1150 two up fully loaded, it was a hot day so I kept it over 100 as often as was possible, at one point I chatted to a couple of Kawasaki riders who were heading our way and assured me I was welcome to follow if I could keep up, they dropped back after a while

Fuel consumption was in the 30's

Definately the aerodynamics. Been touring on my GSX-R1000 with my brother on his 1150. I always had to stop first during normal riding (smaller tank). As soon as we got on the autoroute at 80 plus, he had to stop first.

Mine always returns 180 - 200 miles between fill ups whrther riding like a or not!!!

Sounds stupid I know, but even a strong head wind can make a huge difference, especially if you're two up with very un-aerodynamic-friendly panniers. We tend not to think about head / tail winds when we drive or ride, but take a push bike out on a windy day and you'll soon notice it ...

Drag increases at the SQUARE of speed!

The GS is not exactly aerodynamic to start with, then add two up and panniers and I'm not surprised that the fuel consumption has taken a dive.

Fuel consumption. Thats where the 1150 very high geared box comes into it's own.

It's amazing the difference that sitting at a constant 90mph makes.

Riding in britain on my ZZR600, with pillion and luggage, I used to get 140 ish to reserve. Obviously the speed is up and down like a whores drawers....

Went to Francais, and sat at 95mph CONSTANTLY. I was suprised to hit reserve in 95 miles.
