I've just test ridden the '06 GS on my normal London commute and want to buy one. For all of those of you who commute through fairly heavy traffic (and there are enough of you!) can anybody tell me what mileage you can expect on a tankfull. If I can get three days worth of commuting without filling up (218 miles) then that's the only possible objection covered (apart from the dosh of course).

Thanks

OG

... Depends how much juice you 'burn' on the brakes

... Town/Highway commuter type journeys I get 9.5 miles per litre, with reasonable fun ... added japes drop me to 9.0 Miles per litre

... Touring runs yield 10 ... 10.5 ... even 11

... 20 Litre effective capacity may have you fueling every-other day instead of every third. Unless you get a squidgy tourer, or a Dullville, you're not going to get much better effective range than a stock GS ... wot about an adventure?

under normal usage, i've been averaging between 220 to 240 miles to a tank.
Managed to get just over 260 when touring and thats without the tank mod done. Have known people to get about 280 with tank mod.

You won't be far off that figure of 218. My July 06 bike returns anywhere from 200-225 to a tank (well, to about 10miles remaining on the fuel/mileage countdown thingy) dependant on how bad the traffic has been. My commute is a little motorway at motorway speed ;) , a lot of city centre Liverpool riden as quick as traffic and common sense allows, and a bit of A-road. I have noticed that the fuel economy is improving the more miles I put on it (approx 1100 per month).
Hope this helps.

OG,

I've only had my GS a short while and havn't pushed things to any limits yet.

But on my Daily commute A2, M25 & A22. I'm getting around 190-195 miles before hitting reserve which is then quoted as 46 miles left in the tank.

By my figures thats around 51-52 mpg.

So I guess that 218 is very possible.

I commute from Surrey into Central London (25miles) and average about 10 miles a litre.

Sod it - I'm going to put the deposit down. I guess I'm smitten anyhow. Thx for the feedback. OG

My London commute on my quite low mileage 12GS

19.5 gallons gets me about 160 miles and the countdown meter will be between 2 miles to go and zero.

I like 2nd gear

re fuel and a GS

Hey OG,
if you're thinking of using your GS for commuting...have you considered the 650 ?
We have just returned from touring all round the west coast and north of Scotland , using all sorts of roads for well over 1000 miles, and have worked out the average mpg to be between 75 and 80.....!! Coming home, my low fuel light came on at 233 miles , and there are still 4 litres in the tank to go......
They're also very nimble and light and cost far less, especially as there are a few second hand out there at the mo,with winter coming and all that.......
Anyway, just a thought
Happy and safe riding !

...food for thought, indeed.....

Please tell me, what sort of speed will these 'bikes cruise at ? Do they ever feel "out of breath" ?

Thanks....... :thumb :)

Hi Jonnie,
The 650 will cruise along quite happily at 80 / 85....fit a higher screen than standard and no problem.Fuel will go down a bit though, around high 60's.
In town you may find yourself going up and down the gears a fair bit but the 650's are so easy to get along with and so much fun into the bargain ; they will go anywhere and do anything !! :D
Hope this helps!

I would agree with Heff on this. :thumb We have had our 650's (which we used on the PWR) for a year now, in London, and there is no greater bike for around town in terms of economy and comfort. You rattle abit at stand still points - but you can see well and the steadiness for filtering and just slower moving is outstanding. Fuel consumption really good and, as Heff said, sitting at 80 is not a problem although if using ali panniers (ie the wider ones) above that tends to cause a fair bit of buffeting.
Good luck mate! Cool bike and a cool crowd eh? ;)

Is the 1200 a bit thirsty compared to the 1150 ?
Mine has done over 300 miles to a tank at least twice ( had it about 6 weeks ) and thats a mix of commuting / scratching / motorway. Always has the panniers on too.

I have a 25 mile round trip from Enfield into Old Street each day and I normally ride up to having the reserve light come on, fill up, (about 19 litres go in at this point) and I get about 110-120 miles done before having to fill up again. This is a lot of stop-start riding, mostly 1st-2nd gear and traffic-light GPing (you need to have some fun on your commute in). This is with a '99 1150.

My 1200GSA does about 42mpg through town, about 50 on a decent run. I'm happy enough with that.

Still running my GS in, but have just used a tankful and got 224 miles ( 3 miles showing on the "left to go" meter), 19.5 litres to fill up, 52 MPG.

I was pleased with this, means when out touring I can go to 200 miles safe in the knowledge I've some left!

As for the gauge, well no movement until 100 miles or so then it plummets to 1/2 way, then however it seems very accurate right down to the "left to go" meter.
